Junior Fred Wint ers foUowed a second in the 80 with a strong win in the Open Main and afterwards was h an ded Expe r t cards for next week. Sportsmen riders followed a tough mini act with some good races of th eir own as Steve Crawford and Mitch Davidson took th eir 100 Novice and 360 Expert races respectively. Steve fough t off mini transfer rider Jimmy Fee and Tim Rose for his win. Fee was also impressive in his first big bike ride. The youngest of the Davidson brothers showed a coming of age this evening as he topped the largest Expert field after suffering bike lapses earlier in the season. Always a good small bore rider, as evidenced by his 125 win aboard the BIendzall Special, Mitch showed excellent poise as he held off the charges of Chuck Miller and Dennis Huff of Modesto. Huff made the strongest charge at Mitch but eventually dr opped back and ended up third behind Miller . • Intense valley heat has virtually eliminated the cushion at Pioneer where owner Jerry Griffith must choose between a slippery but safe course or a semi-cushion but somewhat bumpy ride. Expert racers handle the cushion well while less experienced riders lose their cool; therefore the track has remained a smooth but sometimes slippery affair through the hot summer months. Cushion or groove doesn't seem to matter to some, however. Mini racing was excellent as Experts Jim Felice and Fred Merkel, Junior Fred Winters, and Novice Erin Mcllatton turned in outstanding rides. Felice made a rare appearance at Oakdale and seemed to adapt q uickly as he o utdistan ced a strong field of 80 Experts. Jim jumped to the lead from lap one and never relinquished his starting margin over Jeff Mason (Hon). Moto Fast Rick Ryan was relegated to third after su ff ering two weak starts• Merkel, meanwhile, sh owed that the transition from four stroke to two stro ke p ower was easy as he captured a large 100 Expert Main in only his th ird race aboard a Yamaha. Second place Tim Wo rth. who took 125 Senior overall, seems to have already found lhat mudhole at Sprocke ts Park.
