Peterson and everyone's favorite school principal, Dan Ginther. Then mix in one Cecil Arispe up with the gang from Crescent City, and two of our own Caveman Country kids, Rich Word and Mark Detwiler. The usual duel between Peterson and Word was going on with Ginther on their heels and Det wriler about to do in Ginther. The bikes could barely be heard over the noise the spectators were making. Flyin ' Brian came off Number One in that race but he needed a win after getting shot down bad in the 125 A Main. Two North Bend kids, Mike Bishop and Phil Harles came to win and win they did. Then Gold Hill-er Louis Booth gave a real chase to finish third. With a super ride, and making Brian chew dirt, was a kid named Rod Peterson. Brian knows hi m well - it's his yo unger brother. 100cc rider Ken Percy is used to having his own way at this track but he recko ned without a little guy by the name of Bruce Smylie, w ho dogged Percy's heels, threw hi s bike into comers like a p ro and gassed it at th e righ t mornen t to whip by Percy an d sail on. • Resu lts in Resu lts Section. Mike Freeman (Bul) edged out Mark Giraldes in the 250cc Junior Match race. Troy Cummings (Ya m), overcame his 60 yard handicap to win the 80cc Mini Handicap race, taking the lead from Doug Donnan (Yam) on the white flag lap. Jeff Valentine (Yam) with a 10 yard handicap finished third. A great battle developed between Albert Griego (Yam ) and George Irwin (Yam ) for first place in the 100cc Mini Handicap with Griego the victor. Jim Conger (Yam), holding a 20 yard handicap, took over third two laps before the checkered flag. Ken Gray , with a 20 yard handicap, again dominated in the 200cc Handicap by taking over the lead early and maintaining it to the end. Several position changes occurred before second and th ird pl ace were decided. Coming fro m behind were Jeff Fowler (Bul) (35 yard handicap) and Randy Freeman (Bul) (20 yard handicap) who battled their way to a second and third place finish respectively. • Resu lts in Res ults Sectio n . S.I.R. Night MX By Sue Sykes Paul Johnson wins Fremont scrambles KENT, WASH. ,JULY 6 Gary Racca (Hon) took both 125 Pro motos to claim the Wednesday night purse at S.I.R. First moto Racca zipped into the front from By W. H. Spence r FREMOll.'T, CAL.,JULY 26 the starting tum and commanded a generous lead over hard ridin ' Lee Voss (Suz). But on that last stretch of back jump Racca got into trouble and Voss was peckin ' on his fender. It was a good pull through the last two turns and a fight right down to the flag with Racca chec kin g in first, The second time out Racca was never pressed, claiming a clean sweep. Rick Bene k (Pen) sco red out .wi th a two-one in 250 Pro action to pi ck up his money. Rick Weidman (Hon) won moto Former National Amateur Champion Paul Johnson returned to his winning ways in just three weeks back after a four year layoff. He led the 500 Expert Main from wire to wire beating out old smoothie John Hlebo, HIebo had some traffic problems early but moved through to chase Johnson to the checkered with Benny King copp ing the las t p oint-paying tr ophy. The 125 C crowd was there in full force. Glad to see these riders get their ' equal share of laps and recognition they'll be the 125 Pro class o ne day. First overall Bryan BeMaray (Hon) was third in the first division heat and when the riders were mixed again he led them all the way to the flag. ' . Results in Results Section. Eklund, Mamola win again By w. H. Spencer FREMONT, CAL., JULY 23 It was the old broken record trick for round SIX in Sem i-Pro short track with Steve Eklund winning over Mike Faria in the 360 Expert and Randy Mamola pulling ou this second straight 250 Expert win in as many weeks. In the big bike Main Mike Faria le d the pack aro und th e slippery quarter oval for the firs t half. Eklund worked hard to get aro und Don Bailey and then took the lead and win. Mamola had his work cut out forhim with Bailey also doing m uch of the cut and run stuff. Dave Rocha got his J un ior card tonight and promptly went out and proved he was ready for the 360s by winning over Jim Mahoney and Rich Luhdorff. A real heads up duel developed between Bryan Whitton and Lynn George in the 360 Novice. Every ti me George woul d try for a pass, the Kawasaki ride r out of Arena H·D would decide he wanted that part of the track and all heads were up to see what would happen. George was so confused by it all that he stayed safely out of Whitton's line fo r the second with little J im Casey taking th ird. Latest hot shoe in the 25 0 Junior clas s is Joey Dalla who battled it out too th and n ail , spoke and bar, with Paul Austin, Gene Moran and a crashing Rick Siote, Dalla zapped them all just past the hal fway mar k for a big win and a bunch of points closer to Expert. Lightnin ' Larry Krusemann took the 80 Expert brass with Torrey Arguello winning his umpteen th Junior event, while for a change Tony Deatherage didn't win the 100 Experts but crashed. Mike Frozen won that trophy and Bobby Sh afer the Junior. • Mamola two, Slack one By W. H. Spencer SAN JOSE , CAL., JULY 27 The second Semi-P ro half-mile ran smooth and acciden t free on a super-prepared track that had an hour and a half of practice and saw heats start a t 12: 10 and Mains do ne . at 4 :45. Yamaha's Randy Mam ola swe pt to wins in both 125 and 250 competition but not without sti ff co mpetition . . Kenny Netto led most of the heat and a few laps of the 125 Main before the pint sized speedster took command. The lightweight d ueled in both the 250 heat and Main with No . One white plater Rick Delacy. Nearly 60 360 Experts signed in for the biggest part of the Iimi ted 54 50 purse and the decision to run only one Main met with some controversy. The first of six heats proved what a tussle it would be. Chris Hudson (Bul) swept to an easy win over super speedster Ro d Spencer. Larry Silva had a good bout with Steve Carrillo, Do n Bailey inched out Rodger Slack, and in another dynami te race, Scott Nelson beat o u t Chuck Miller. Eric Engen did in Marlin Stewart an d J ohn Proto got h is operation together to win the last over Rusty Davis. • S.I.R. 250 Pro winner Rick Benek makes a I·o-o-ong reach for a pivot. Cycleland Short Track • By Pat Upton CHICO , CAL., AUG . 2 There were several position changes in the l25cc Novice Main as J oh n Land (Yam) took the lead fro m the start, J ohn Sudberry (Yam) in second and Jim Boes in third. The second lap saw Sudberry lose it in the south tum and a couple laps later Boes was out of it with bike trouble. Moving in to fill the gap were Rich Dermody (Yam) and Pete Upton (Yam). J oe Boes (Bul) first off the line in the 250cc Novice class fo ught hard to hang in there for a first. Pau l Marti n (Bul) came fro m behind to ta ke a second. Bult aco -rno un ted Ken Gray , in first, extended his lead to finish four bike length s ahead of the pack in th e 200cc J un ior Main. Randy Free man (Bul ) took over second place fro m Mike McKee in the third lap. The 250cc Expert Main was the o nly race of the evening requiring a restart. The race was dominated by Cliff Hylton (Yam) and Jim Hubbard (Yam) fini shing in that order. . . . III UJ " > III UJ :l III 29
