Denton, Vidic, and Rubly do-it at Irwindale By John Bethea IRWINDALE. CAL. AUG. 15 Since it was a non-qualifier night, the track went back to its old practice of limiting the entry to 250 and shortly after 6pm that 20 quota was reached. And by the normal close-off time of 6 :30, 40 more had been turned away at the gate. For the first time this season, Gary Denton pulled off a sweep in th e 12 5cc Pros despite the presence of the always tough David Taylor in the line up. David got smoked in the first even t and finished with an un typical fourth , then finished off the program with two seconds to wind up as the runnerup to Denton. Mark Lawrence broke the Honda spell by bringing his Yamaha across for a third. Surprisingly, thi s wee k there were more 250cc Pros. Bu t, there was no surprise when Jeff Vidic (Mai) emerged as the overall winner. What was unusual is that he won only one moto in taking the victory. David Taylor, riding a 250, won the first race, then slipped back into the pack in the next pair to end up fourth . Vidic won the next and Bill Rubly (C-A) won the final. Rublyended fifth overall. Second to Vidi c was Val Tamietti (Mai) from the strength of two seconds. Jeff Jennings (BuI) was third. Rubly got revenge with a 500cc Pro triumph, foll owed by Curtis Lessel (Mai) second and last week's winner Luke Messer (Mai) third. Track officials are expecting perhaps another record crowd of more than 300 for t his Friday nigh t 's final qualifier for the Septem ber 5 CMC Night National Championship . Additional course changes are being made in hopes of making the track safer for the huge turnout of riders. • Results in Results Section LaPorte, Hannah & Croft clean up at Saddleback By Jon Hayt IRVINE; CAL, AUG. 17 Cl\IC races at Saddleback Park are very popular events when a $1500 purse is offered.
