spe ctacu larl y ! Cannon h ad a good lead over Rich mond but Pat was slowly gaining ground. Chris held on to the lead leaving Pat to settle for the seco nd. The last mota was the tie breaker; Pat and Chris came blasting off the jump and soon Pat had the lead again, with Chris right behind. Richmond and Cannon built up a big lead and at the checkered it was Pat with a well deserved first and Cannon in second. To add to the excitement, th e Open Experts were out to stun the spectators. "T-Bone" Grigsby was first off the line as he wheeled his Yamaha into a first pl ace finis h. David Reinh ardt, becoming good co mpetiti on for T-Bone, was second with San Diego 's Frank Bollinger in the third spot. The las t time au t Grigsby was off the line in first again, but got out in some lo ose dirt and went off the track. Reinhar d t took advantage of the situation and held on to take the first. Steve Tinsley moved in to take the second and T-Bone, b ack in action, for th e thir d. Results in Results Sec tion . Williams the win . Th e 500 Pro class was dominated by, you guessed it, Tommy Croft on an old R.c. Honda. Croft pl ain smoked the Pros as he won both m ota s and the over all. Th e best race of the day was for sec ond place in the m ain. As Rich Th orwaldson (Suz) held the p osition for a wh ile and was then re lieved by Gary Ogden , wh o was then passed by Ken Zah rt (Bul) on the fifth lap . Malcolm Smith special By Andi Gangewer ELSINORE, CAL , AUG. 2 Larsen was under pressure from C. Howell (Hus) and he fmally managed to slip past Larsen in a muddy switch back. Howell led the re maining half of the m ota to take the win, Larsen was second. R an dy Bum s zapped the 250 Amateur/Exp ert class off the line, with Mike Steams (CZ) and Mike McGowen (B u I ) ri gh t behind. St eams and McG owen both swept by a chagrined Bums on the first lap , wh en Ran dy 's YZ dev eloped an ill shifting transmission. Stears and McGowen dueled bri efly, but McGowen fmally pulled away to win the mota. Am ateur G. Myers got his Honda out in front of the combined 125 field, but lost the lead to hard charging Dennis Curtis (Hon ) on the first lap . Curtis proceeded to ru n away from the pack to take the win. Myers was second at th e flag , and first Am ateur for round one, Joe Santich (Han) came from a bad start to claim second Expert and Bob She rwood (Han) was third. Lars Larsen came back to win th e second Open round and claiming the overall win. Howell suffered difficulty in mota two coming from behind to fm ish second taking the number tw o spot ove rall. Dennis Curtis repeated his runaway performance in the second 125 mo ta taking a str ong first overall. Bob Sherwood was awarded second overall . for the day and Joe Santich was ran ked third. - A group of nine Malcolm Smith motocross riders were at Elsinore Raceway to try out the. scrambles course. Leon Baird (Mai) had a Bell is swell good lead on the rest of the group and took the checkered in mota number one. David Dory had second all to himself, while James Lewis and Richard Ball struggled over the third position. After a side -by-side battle, Baird fmally pulled off the second mota win with little room to spare. The third time out it was Bair d again, looking right at home on the TT track. The familiar battle between Chris Cannon and Pat Richmond resumed in the Mini Combined class. Pat was off the line in front, but Chris was in hot pursuit as they whipped their way around the ' track. Pat worked his way through the pack for th e win with Chris not far behind. The next time out it was Chris ' tum to take the win , and he did it GARDENA, CAL, AUG. 13 By Mike Klinger He broke his ann months ago shooting for the I25 Championships back East, but after one moto Mike Bell (Hon) smoked the 12 5 Pros at Ascot this Wednesday night. Mark Tyer (Yam ), another racer just back from the 125 Championships, ran away with mota one after getting the holeshot, David Taylor (Han) and Ed Oark (Hon) battled for the second spot, until Oark pulled off with bike p~blems. The regular Ascot night wmner Tim Lunde (FMF) was holding onto third with Bell coming from a second-to-last-place start, to challenge Jim Domarm (Han) for fifth, Tyer won , Taylor second and Lunde third.
