of a handic ap at the Third Annual Cock's Crow Enduro. He not on ly wo n his class but swept to an overall win, acin g out Bult aco -mounted Sam Lyman by eigh t sec on ds. Ten rid er s zeroed th e co urse which wasn 't all that ea sy . Lyman's second overall w ill probab ly vau lt him into the yearly CRC points lead over XL · 12 5 mounted Jerry Counts who co mmi tted an un forgiving error on th e first loo p. He arrived at a chec k one min ute early wh ich cos t him two points. 'The 59-m ile en d uro st arted off with a 34 mile first loop th at everyone rode. It was a m it e ch allenging for the kids an d powder-puffers but ex cept for one hill was completely rideable. ( For y o u readers who say that 's the opinion o f an A rid er : A nine-year-old, riding his XR- 75, co mple te d the loop re qu iring help only on the o ne hill . It was his first enduro .) Th e loop star te d out interestingly enough, heading in to the hills east of the pit area at Sidewinder Road, then on to a mining road out behind Barstow for awhile before taking so me washes into a big loop out in the Johnson Val ley which was a tad bo ring. Finally the course got back into some int eresting terrain th at kept the mini-bikers humping right along. Didn 't get a n y o fficial res ults on the one-loopers but ten -year-old Terry Dean Swets dropped just one point which looks good. All the chec ks and mileages were 'spot on which made co urse lay out chief Clin t Sweet happy . Clin t clocked everything with his new Ossa Super Pio neer , finally re tiring his SDR. ~ « I > o z « Mi~e > UJ .J e Z « .J > a: a: 5 Stearns battled w ith John Tessitore in both motos of t he 250 Pros, but ended up in t he runner- up posit io n . After a 41 -minute break the second loop awaited and the point chasers were at work trying to py sch each other out . The loop started righ t out up a nasty uphill which almost bottle-necked on th e later numbers. At a fast 24 MPH aver age that made things tough. Especially since the first check was located just fou r m iles out. You real ly had to wick it on to make it. At least ten riders did. Th e second loop was 25 miles long and went quickly as the averages were higher than the first loop. Th ere was o nly o ne more secret check on the loop and it was fair ly easy to get to, so basically the enduro was decided at th e fi rst chec k, which was also the tiebreaker. Crash Can o ran into more bad lu ck on the second loo p . He had lunched his tranny on Saturday and bo rrowed a friend's wife's bike for the enduro. He broke a footpeg off and did a rather spectacular crash (living up to his ni ckname) splattering a Yucca Tree with his bod. lie still limped in just three poin ts down. There didn 't seem to be man y powder-puffers or a whole lot of kids riding. Maybe the th reat of 11 0 degree heat kept them away. Actua lly with the temperature hovering in the 90's, it wasn 't bad at all for August in th e dese rt. • Results 1. sam Strong (2 50 A + 3 5 ). 2 . Sam L ym an (Opn A ). 3.
