ORA Euroscrams By Dale Brown SOGGY DRY LAKE, CAL, AUG.17 J amie Avels, a rider known for his consisten t top ten finishes, pushed his 400 Mon o into the winner's circle, t opping the Amateur/Expert finale at the ORA European Scrambles. Avels was running in third after the start, behind TIm Bowman (400 Yam) and Amateur Dean Miller (250 Yam) . He passed Miller soon enough, but he wasn't making up too much ground on the flying Bowman. But Bowman has been plagued with the worst kind of luck this year and it happened again, as this time he suffered a high-speed getoff on the th ird of four loops. The last loop presen ted Avels with his biggest challenge, for Bill Conroy (400 CZ) had moved up to threaten his lead. Avels held him off and about a mile from the pits he had a 100-yard lead. Then Conroy berserked it off a ridge and crashed, although he got up in plenty of time to finish second. Mike Johnston got by a tiring Miller to get third overall and first 250 on his KTM. Miller topped the Amateur class again . finishing fourth. Lon Peterson (400 CZ) was the only other Amateur to finish in the top ten, his sixth overall being good for first Open Amateur. Eric Spaeth ( 125 Hon) finished first small-bore, chipping away a little of Gary Praster's class point lead. Gus Paull (4 00 Yam) took the S~,:, ior Expert win. Mike Cole (250 Hus ) took the early lead in the Novice class onl y to cr ash in -a tight cany on an d h an d it to Steve Neal (25 0 Yam ) who later had his gas tank come off. Ron Kulek (25 0 CoAl took the lead an d held ' it to win easily over Marve Owens (400 Hus) and Propperous Shepard (400 Yam ). Allen Meek (12 5 Hon) came from back in the p ackup to eigh th and finished first small -bore. Another 250 Can-Am, this time under the guiding hands of Bill Meistrell, won the 250/Open Beginner class , well ahead of Dick Eliason (4 00 Yam) and Ray Kern,!' Hom (360 Bul). Emmett Burney (175 Hus) took the 0-200 Beginner class lead about three-quarters of the way around the first loop and won just ahead of Scott Bates (Hon). Jeff Newhouse rode his new 12 5 Mono ' for the first time, finishing third. Dennise Jones (Bul) won the "B" Powderpuff class , fmishing well up in the order. Kelly Kline took the Minis finishing so well that had she entered as a Powderpuff, she would have finished third. The nine-mile course was quite fast for the first four or five miles before getting into a tight canyon . an d sandwash section and than a fast cross-country section the last couple of miles to the pits. • Cock's Crow Enduro By larry l angley BARSTOW, CAL ., AUG. 17 Sam Strong proved that entering the Over-35 class isn 't that much Notice the interesting rock formations.
