third in th e last race, but picked up first overall , foll owed by Garv is and Marc Mclure (Suz) . Rick V an Ryn (Ho n ) rode to firs t in moto one of the 12 5 Intermediate cla ss, Robin Richey (Hon ) grabbed second, and J ackson Kistler (Han) dropped into third. Richey led mota two, Kis tler moving up to second, and Scott Sheedy (Han) taking third. The final mota had Kistler first, Richey moved down to second, and Steve Harper (Han) placed third. Richey won first overall, Kistler followed, and Harper was number three. Steve Harper (Han) m ade a good showing in the 250 Junior class , with two firsts and a third, putting him first over all. Don Snyder (Hon) did well in the firs t two races, taking seconds, but fell way back in the last race. Wayne Martin (Hus) only took fourth in moto one, but he stole first in the second race and second in the third, putting h im second overall. Showing up on a 250 Yamaha in the 2 50 /Op en Senior class , David-Williams pocketed the first place money without much difficul ty , the real battle being for second be tween Kelly Callaway (Yam) and Richard Franklin (Yam) . Positions were swapped throughout each race, Franklin ending up with a fourth and two seconds, and Callaway with a second and two thirds, giving both riders eigh t points. Because of the final moto rule, Franklin took home second, and Callaway got third. • Results in Res ults Section They came to race at OCIR By Ernest Colem an EAST IRVINE, CAL. ,JULY 3 0 As summer rolls on so does the AMC r acing action at OCIR, where MX r acers showed up in force for chain lube prizes an d some h ard racing. 25 0 Exper t Dave Carlson (Mai) had it o ut with Ste ve Mon th gue (Mai ) an d Aar on Bassett (Mai) in on e of the best races of the nigh t. In the firs t m o to , Bassett came ou t of the gate first with Monthgue right behind him. Basse t t hel d hi s lead into th e second lap , wh ere M o nth gu e a n d C arls o n gassed i t p ast Basse tt. Going into th e third lap Carlson passe d Mo nthgue to go for the overall win for th e night. . Robert Hannan (Yam) m ad e it look easy as he too k the holeshot in the first moto of 125 Pros but Broc Glover (Yam) and Rick Bean (Han) did not have the same thin g in mind. They had come to race and they ch ased Hannan all over the tr ack, but Bob was able to hang on for the win. From the start of the third moto it was a three-man race with Bean leading the first lap followed closely by Glover and Hannan. Going in to the second lap Glover and Hannan passed Bean, with Hannan taking the lead and the win followed by Bean in second. • Resul ts Pending. One for Joe Plante By Mike Klinger GARDENA, CAL.,JULY 30 Dominance of the 125 Pro winners circle by the Lunde Brothers has ended momentarily at As c ot P ark M ot ocr o ss. Wednesday night, Joe Plante (Han ) wo n motos two an d th ree to collect the 125 Pro overall fo r th e first time this season. The two " Nigh t Stalkers", J eff Jennings (Bul) an d Bill Rubly (Mai ), w on th eir respective 25 0 and 500 Pro clas ses. It looked as if the Lunde Brothers were going to battle again this night for th e top h on ors. Chuck Lunde (PCH) pulled off with a dead engine on th e first lap of moto one and TIm Lunde (F MF) took the win. The res t of th e ni gh t was all J oe Plan te's as he led from the ga te in the last two motos with Ti m Lun de reall y pushing to catch up . Lunde h ad to se t tle for second ove rall and J oh n Tomlin (Ho n) was third . A rep eat performance by 250 Pro ace, Je ff Jennings (Bul ), materialized early in the evening. Jennings won the first moto but not before Bill Rubly (C-A) and Dan Barnes (Mai) led for four laps. Jenning's only competition ca me from Rubly and Barnes, but he pushed them aside and eyed the overall. For the record: Jennings, Rubly and Barnes. The big bore Maico of Bill Rubly fmally h ad someone to race with. Jeff Jackson (Mai) showed up and gladly took three second places as Rubly walked awa ywith the victory. • Results in Results Section Scramblin' in the dark CHAIN LIFE! ~ING CHAIN WIE! ~ Often copied , but neverduplicated . Calliontia 90070 1 31699-9951 21 ~ By Maureen Lee ELSINORE, CAL., AUG. 1 A D istrict 37 scrambles on a Friday night is a bit unusual but so as not to subject riders to summer daytime heat or conflict with the weekly Saturday night TT, the Gripsters opted for one and it was neat ! . Just for signing up you got a present like fork oil or chain lube, while class winners at the end of the night were given more goodies. Arthur Junker got a good set of tie downs and Jim Redding an alloy. loading ramp, while mini winner Todd Brown was happy wi th a S10 gift certificate from Long Beach Honda. The 125 Novices were th e biggest gang in town, with heats to run ins tead of motos, First heat Jim Speigle (Yam ) and J oe Steffan (Yam) settled first and second spot with good racing. Second heat, Danny Perkins (Hon ) tumbled, came ba ck on the restart to run up fr on t w ith Dave Jenkins (Hon ) and Carl Wh itt (Y Z). The semi had J eff Wright (Yam ) trying h ard to ge t first place away fro m Robin Loomis (Yam ) and one pie plate ride r brought a ye ll from th e stands as he m issed the firs t turn, went wide and almost landed in th e tires way at th e top of the h ill before he could stop . Jenkins, St effan, and Perkins mixed it up for th e lead in the main and toward th e end Steffen nearly ticked Danny 's rear wheel as he'd try to go under, but he couldn 't quite comple te the pass. Good racing! It was bu siness as usual in th e 125 Junior-Expert division. Mike Tidwell (Y Z) was the winner, but not wi th ou t eluding Gordie Kidd (Yam ), Wayne Rainey (Ho n ), and Steve Woskoski (YZ). But for sheer letting it all hang out, it was Charlie Summers (YZ) , second overall, especially in his third race with Rainey. Friday night that 500-Open Novice class was more fun to watch than the Experts. First it was Earl Parker (Yam) just flying, with Ken Owen (Tri) really working to get to second then losing it to Redding. Parker was uncatchable. Next round it was Wayne Melanson (Yam) into the lead and Redding right with him. My note reads "C-Z goes like hell .. . great battle," it was, too . Redding holeshot the last heat with Parker right with him, but the flying Parker dropped back as Steve Jones (Yam) got himself all together and just shot up th rough the pack. Th e Op en Junior /Experts had a go od time too. It was a three-way go bet wee n th e Yamahas of J im Wright, Steve Miller, and Gripster Doug Hannon. In the second round Rick Marquis (Hon) wen t under Mike Boyle (BSA) and just p lain clobbered him, bending Mike 's brake ou t of shape and dumping his o wn ch ain in the p rocess.
