Palfreyman/Gardener were trying very hard to stay up with their class bu t only be ing ab le to u se second gear was too big of a handicap. At the fmish it was the Kawasaki taking th e win followed by the 450 Ho nda Wasp taking second overall and first lightweight. The start of the second moto was the beginning of an exciting battle. Sanner Sr./Sanner took the lead at the start and were very quickly bumped fro m that position by Ridyard/Vereersch on that p owerful Kawasaki. This placing did not last lo ng as the Sanners came back with the Norton on the next lap and bounced the Kaw for the lead. Bertus/Ash ton were running third on a 750 Norton Wasp followed by Bell/O'Conner in fourth. Soon Bertus/Ashton took control of the lead as Sanner Sr./Sanner dropped back to fo urth. By this time Pal freyman/ Gardener were charging and they came from seventh to first by the third lap . The whole ti me they were m ak in g their ch arge o n the leaders they looked like they were stuck wide open in fo urth. By th is time Hun tely /Ritchie were r u n n i n g in second followe d by Ridy ard/Vermeers ch . The Honda an d the Kawasaki we re battling it out when the Honda cras hed. The Kawasaki was doing a p owerslide when his rear wheel hit the front wheel o f th e Honda. This moved Bertus/Ashton up to third position and Crandell/Swart into fourth. Martin over the big whoops while Martin was doing some radi cal tankslappers. Luckily, he was able to save himself fro m a world of hurt. Martin then dropped to third, behind Chuck Rouse . Smith was really going in a berserko style , keeping up a furious pace th at no one was able to to uch. Smith finished well ahead of th e rest. Rouse took second, while Scot Prante (Hus) put through so me fairly consistent riding to take third overall. • Results in Results Section Ron Turner & John Smith take South Bay Pros By Jon Hayt CHULA VI STA, CAL. , J ULY 23 South Bay Speedway was looking good again as the races got underway . The 125 Pro 's and combined Intermediates took off with Ro n Turner (CA) getting his usual hole shot. Turn er held his lead and won the first m ota. The sec ond 125 Pro mo to was a different story thoug h. Turner slingshot to the lead for the first lap. John Smith (Hon), the Smogbowl High School m otocross winner, was right on Turner's tail. Press urized, Turner fe ll on the secon d lap ; Smith got the lead and the over aIl win for the nigh t. The 250 Pro class was h ot raci ng as Jim Martin (eZ), las t weeks winner, got the shot in the first mota, made it about half way around the track and then his fr o nt brake locked up and he crashed. Randy Burns (Yam) and Ron Turner (C.A) were right behind to take advantage of the situation. Turner grabbed the lead and the win . The second 250 Pro mo ta also saw Martins luck run o ut as he crashed at the start and wa s ru n over by two o t her riders. The race was restarted with Martin retiring and Turner getting the h ole shot. He pulled a good lead on fast- moving Burns and won overall. • Results HEAVYWE IG HT , 1. Burns hot at South Bay By Jon Hayt CHU LA VISTA, CAL. , JULY 30 South Bay had another night of fierce competition. The action started with the two mini classes. Byron Antonacci (Yam) won both classes an d really showed the crowd his riding skil l. The kid's hot! ~ The 125 Pros took off with Ron Sidehacks return to Valley R.A.C.E. time at Corona By Teri Buchanan CO RONA, CAL., J ULY 24 Don Berry (Yam ) brought in straight firsts in the Mini class, but not withou t so me r o u gh competition from Martin Kistler (Hon). Third overall was taken by J ill Mcllrath (Hon ). . In m otos one an d two of the 125 Begin ne r class, J am es Rockwell (Hon) had the lead, but Tom Coco (Yam) took it away in the fin al race, follo w ed by Wa rren More no (Han) and Kirk Snodgrass (Han), push ing Rockwell back to fourth . Moreno too k third in m oto o ne and second in moto two , giving h im second overall behind Rockwell. With a score of 2-4-3 , Snodgrass claimed third overall. J ohn Gless did a fine job in th e 100 Senior class , leadin g the first two races. Ty Richey (Yam) claimed first in the final m o ta . Gless got the cash, Richey took second, and Todd Miller (Hon) placed third. Scott Slater was the one to beat in the first two motos of the 125 Junior class, Tom Garvis (Hon) doin g it in the final mota. Slater (Yam] fell back to Randy Bums to ppe d a to ugh class of competitors in t he 250 Pro class. By Barbra Brown MOORPARK, CAL.,JULY 20 There were seven heavyweight and five lightweight hacks participating in the eighth round of the Sidehack Series here at Valley Cycle Park. It was a tight race to the first comer as the entire pack stayed very close together. Com in g out of the tum it was Ridyard/Vermeersch on the 750 Kawasaki in the lead follo wed by Sanner, Sr ./Sanner (750 No rton Wasp) and Bell/O'.Conner (750 Honda Wasp ) close behind. Fourth p lace was held down by the first ligh tweigh t, Hun tley/Ritchie (450 Honda Wasp) . First lap ac ti o n saw Cran dell /Swar t stall their 650 Triumph in the middle of the track when the electricals wen t so uth. When the Tri u mph stalled th ey blocked the track in front of M onohan/Orsdale and their 65 0 Yamaha co uld n ot get arou nd with all of the tr affi c going by, As they were s itting there Palfreyman/Garde ner . nailed them and tore their shifte r off in the p ro cess. When they all final ly go t un de r way again th e o nly hack that was suffering was the Triumph and it had to finish th e rest of the race in second gear. While all of this was going o n th e Kawasaki was moving out to an incredi ble lead an d su rprisingly enough the 45 0 Honda Wasp had taken over sec o nd wi th th e 750 Ho nda Wasp in third. Lu cchese /Morgan were ru nn ing six th bu t a bra ken p iston fo rced th em to Turner (CA) getting the hole sho t and the win, fo llowed by hot J oh n Tessitore (Yam) righ t on hi s tail. The next big event of the night also featured Turner as he led fast Randy Burns (Yam) around the track fo r the win in th e 250 Pro class . Of special interest was the nex t 25 0 Pro race. Burns got th e h ole shot with Turner very close. Mike Stearns (Mon) was in thi r d un til Turner crashed, giving Stearns second an d Burns the 250 Pro win for the night. Roun d two of 125 Pros was alm ost a repeat of the first as Turner grabbed the lead an d the win. South Bay will be h osting two of the qualifiers fo r the CMC grand finale at Irwindale.
