Jeff Jennings (Bul) also scored a perfect day to outlast over r twenty 250 Pro riders. As the 125 Pros came around th e first real deciding tum, it was Bob Hannah in the lead and he was never challenged. With Hannah scooting off to a huge lead, Tim Lunde (Yam) , Dan LaPorte ( F RA ), David Taylor (Han) an d Dave Williams (Yam) were the other fac to rs for the top two spots. Bob Stem (Yam) came from a seventh place start to pass six leading riders and fmish second in mota one. Hannah won, St em second, and LaPorte third. Mota t wo looked as if LaPo rte was goin g to run aw ay w ith the show. But after three laps, LaPorte pulled off with a seized motor. Th en wh o was in th e lead? Bob Hannah , and no one co u ld begin to catch him. Second place was the real battle with Taylor and Stem side-by -side, They staye d so close the entire mota that it looked like only one rider. The overall went to Hannah with Stem second and Taylor third. T w e n ty 25 0 Professional riders converged on th e firs t tum and "Mr. Holeshot, " Bill Rubly (C-A ), was first to the Webco Hill. J eff Jennings (Bu l) came off of a fourth place start, began to pick off riders one-by-one. Jennings took the lead and was pushed very hard by Bruce Baron (Yam). , At the checkered, Jennings won by a hair, Baron second, and David Williams (Yam) third. Taylor tops 125 Pro 20 remember that it was Ed Ste ffan (Yam) out in the lead first m ota with Don Grigsby (Yam) on his tail and finally passing, with Marquis moving on up and challenging Steffan. Secon d round it was T-Bone Grigsby in front and Clyde Dennan (Suz) flying to catch up . He over-cooked it in tum one and th en go t in to more · trouble as his rear wheel suddenly stopped sliding and grabbed lots of traction. Clyde didn 't go down but he had an interesting tim e of it, and Marquis won that round. It was Marquis versus T-Bone again. Rick coul dn 't quite make the pass, but their efforts put quite a gap between themselves and Steffan. Steve Fortune and his " Lonely Bul " was up against all those Yamahas in the 250 Expert and did 'em in but it wasn 't easy. Second mota it was Gary Staddan leading with Randy Bird going for the outside of tum one. He made it, 'and then next time around it was Fo rt une doing just th e same thing to take over from h is third spo t. Pass and repass, it was wil d ! Last round, Eddie Beeson got th em all off th e lin e. In that race Randy Bird got in to some real trouble in tum one , but like a true race r left th at throttle on an d he and th e bike stayed toge ther as a team. When in doubt, full o u t! Arthur Junker had th e tr ack wired for his 250 Novice win although Greg Zehner on another Yammie and Steve Loomis tried to catch him but it was three straight for Junker. And the littlest ones of all, the minis, had their night. Todd Brown's Yamaha sure has lots of suds,' but Tommy Walton and Pete Hames never give in and neither did Gene Jenkins on a Honda. In the last mota it was Brown leading, but Hames had gotten right up to his rear wheel when they came into tum one and caugh t up to Rich Mcintosh, who had been having a good' time on an absolute stocker all night and there was some tricky maneuvering to ge t everyone around with Ham es just gelling past as they came ar oun d to th e finish. Ultra and ligh tweigh t point standings are re ally shaking into p lace and Mike Tidwell has num ber on e in both divisions. In the ultra-ligh twe igh t, St eve • Woskoski isn't that far behind. Turner takes second with broken leg By John Bethea EAST IRVINE, CAL., AUG. 1 It was not a very pleasant night for Ron Turner. He did win the 125cc Pro class and finished second overall in the 250cc Pros, but he 'left the track on a stretcher with a possible broken left leg. It happened on the last lap in a terrific battle he was having with Jeff Jennings. Turner was trying to find a line in an attempt to pass when he apparen tly clipped Jeff's rear tire. The next thing was the hi ghside spill. The ironic thing about the whole affair was that Ron still got credit for a fifth in the race since he had co mpleted more than half the laps required for a finish and was awa rded second overall. He had won the 125 Pros without winning a single race. His solid consistency with seconds gave him that win. That 125 race was tight. Scot Clifton (Han) won round one, but then had troubles with the traffic and finished fourth overall. Davey Carlson, a late entry on a Honda, took fifth in round one, then pushed back his opponents in the nex t two races, only to wind up second overall to Turner. Robert Hannah (Yam) was also consistent for third overall. Jennings won the 250 Pro class on the strength of two mota victories and Dave Foltz (Mai) was third. Mike Yorba dominated all three 500c c Pro motos to gamer the win in th at class.
