Two first place trophies were awarded in th is class. J oe Steffen was fir st Am at eu r an d C h as. Summers too k first place for the Exp ert class. Summers was th e number one man in th e first moto , with J oe Steffen a clo se second and fifteen-year -old Randy Thron e th ird. Chas. was secon d the next go 'round with jim Strain pouring it on to finis h in the lead. Summers came back to win the last moto and earn himself an o the r troph y . Steffen was the sec o n d, which gave h im enough points to tak e th e o th er tr ophy . A new recruit to o ur 12 5 Begin ner class was 23-y ear-old Mike Rowray fro m San Diego . Mike brough t in tw o firsts and a seco nd in that orde r. Gre at riding ! Honda mounted Bill Mo on was secon d in the first m oto and th ird in the next two . Norco's Larry Arnold sco re d second by ta kin g a first and a sec o n d an d a co m ple te miss his first m oto. Our newcomer to ok h ome th e trophy and . new rank as Novice . Chris Kelbel was ou t to win an other firs t p l a c e tr ophy in the 250 Am ateur/E xp ert class. Kelbe l and Greg Zehner had a close race go ing . Chris was first , second and third in th at order to ge t him to the h ead of the p ack and win the trophy . Zehner (Yam ) Was a clo se second in th e fir st moto, bu t had so me trouble getting to th e lin e the sec on d race and m issed it alto gether. He made up for his absen ce in th e last ro und by scoo t ing to the win an d second place overall. • Bast blasts at Inland Speedway By Bill Kolberg first to attack the course today , with George Speck (Hon ) grabbing the holeshots in both motos, But it was Tex Collingwood, all th e way from San Francisco, wh o took th e ch ec kere d on h is Yam aha monocross. Smith st arted dead last, but he quickly worked his way up , with Chuck Rouse (Hus) and Steve Rhyan (l\lai ) givin g him a little tro uble. Martin so on dropped o u t with a flat re ar wheel, allowing the swift Smith to take all the marbles. Rouse moved up on Smith, p assing him several times, but Smith was long go ne at th e finish . Nigh t racing really works on yo ur st ar ts, as J im Martin once again proved by grabbing the lead in the secon d moto. John Smith soon zipped past roared to the lead on the first turn from his ou tside slot and repeatedly turned back Sh aw for th e victory in th e four-lap finale . Onl y a flawless performance by the fas t-risin g Jim Fishback prevented Bast from securin g a clean -sw eep for th e .even ing. Th e "Fon tana Flyer" was registering hi s fo ur th Main win of th e seas o n , h alf of which h ave co me at San Bernardin o . Dri vin g fr om the 20·yard marker , Fishback left Mike Curoso, Dubb Ferrell, Mark Ch erry and Larry Sh aw , in ad di tio n to runner-up Bast, in his wake. Dave Sims an d Bruce Penhall div ided up the con so lat io n heats, securing th e H andi cap a n d . Sc r atch portions, respectively. Mike Gross, the "Blue Blazer from San t a An a", cap tured his second Division Two Main in side a week with an easy score in the final. Montclair's jeff Sexton, runner-up in the 1974 Nationals, and Mike Curoso , 1973 runner-up, waged a see-saw battle in th e featured tw o-lap Mat ch Race , before Curoso found a high groove an d then held o ff Sexton for th e win. • John Smith continued his winning barrage at Carlsbad.
