In th e Trail class today, Expert Mark Cartwright (KTM) was the first to see the checkered, followed by another Trail Expert, Bob Meyers (Pen). The next race rs to see the banner were the nervo us Novices, and without even thinking about it their st ar t turned into a fiasco. Abo ut one mile after the bomb there was th is up hill. Not a big one but the Amateur/Experts had chewed it up pretty well, leaving the top tractionless. Well, about the first five go t through and that's where they stopped, leaving th e rest of the class to fight it out at the bottom. Oh wh at a mess! First to the finish was Open Novice Clint Harris (Yam). Second Novice Ronald Andrews (Yam) came u p after getting caught in the bottleneck. For third , it was Division One rider Mike Pa tchen (Yam) and for secon d in the same class, Steve Hurd-sponso red, Jody Belknap (Hus). Continuing h is hard drive , Pierce swept past Rudy Galindo by the ninth tum, rig ht on West Cooley 's rear wheel. Cooley was close behind leader Mike Baeder. Baeder's lead ended on the second lap, with Cooley an d Pierce passing. Galindo, his m o t orcy cle getting faster each ra ce as Mack Kambayashi works on it b it by bit, was st ill packed righ t in with the oth ers, in fourth . By the third lap Pierce led, with Cooley pressing; Baeder was third, p ressed by Gali ndo. A few circu its later, Galindo 's position had fa de d as qu ickl y as his junk brakes. Cooley passed Pier ce when Ron tried a n ovel lin e in one tum, and Baeder still hung on. Pier ce then blew by Coole y on th e straight.
