It rain ed on us Saturday night as
we cruised down th e pit road to
Soggy Dry Lake. It made me
wonder if it might hold down the

dust, but by Sunday mom it was dry as
a bone. On top of th at it was on e of the
h ottest day s o f the year, making it n ot
so coo l for the people in the pits.
Fir s t to th e bomb for the
Amateur/E xpert rac e was Mit ch Mayes
and pulling hard. On his heels was
another factory Husky rider A.C.
Bakken, and winning the berserko badge
of the day was Open Amateur Steve
Shook (Mono) in th ird.
Holding his lead and going for the
gusto through the first check Mit ch was
going strong. but A.C. was not abou t to
give up yardage as th e two le aders
blasted through the rough stuff near the
second check. . A.C.'s charge fen short
when a pucker bush grabbed his fron t
brake cab le, bre aking it and cooling his
ch anc es of b e ating M itc h .
Determin ation kept A.C.'s ride together
as h e watched his fellow team Husky
rider go on fo r the win.
Behind th ese two there was a ba ttle
going on as Steve Shook tried to sha ke
o ff Bru ce " Over the Bars" Ogilvie.
