To th e delight of all the racers, the co u rse included the Grand Prix section. But the dust was so bad, the score kee pers had a hard time reading th e riders ' numbers. The 125 Pros started off with hard lu ck Marty Moates (Ha n) grabbing the lead with Dan LaPorte ( Fra ) and Jeff Eierstedt (Ha n) taking a hot back seat . e Z .J :.: OJ I ~ Marty Moates has a riding sty le all his own . Eierstedt plunged too hard in to . a tum and John Smith (CRT) soon h ad third place under control. With LaPorte really on the gas and pushing considerably, Moates made a boo-boo and unloaded. LaPorte to o k th e lead and the win, with Sm ith second and Eierste d t third. Opening laps in mota two action wen t to a very fast Yamaha rider, Broc Glover . Glover just was n ot fas t enough, as La Po r te dashed p as t him on the famous Carlsbad d ownhill. South Bay rider, John Tessi to re (Yam) had a so lid third, b u t was m oving up on Glover. LaP o rte p ulled away fro m the fiel d and won the big do llars for th e day with Tessit ore second overal l an d Glover third . The 250 Pros start ed li ke an y CMC night race with J eff J en nings (Bu l), Val Tamie tti (Mai) and Bill Ru bly (e- A) all side -by-side . Righ t off, Jennings had the lead. As. th e moto p ro gre ssed, Tamietti th re w a ch ain, Eierstedt crash ed and Ru bl y fell and folded his bars . Movin g into second pl ace , afte r a las t place start , was Eas te rn Motocross star Gary Semics (Kaw). T erry Turner (Yam) kept up with the fro n t of the p ack to hold onto third. For th e record: Jennings, Semics, Turner. It was an in stant repl ay in mota two, only this time Jeff Borden (Mai ) was the new candidate for the third spot. Tamietti dropped out early again, to put Borden in the second position. Jennings had no worries at all and a h alf-lap lead, as Mike McGowen ( Bul) and T u rn er battled fo r the ever-p opular third pl ace. Turner grabbed th e third spot and third overall in th e sta ndings with Borden se co n d and, who els e, J eff J ennings sitting o n top ! There was a ligh t t u rnout in the 5 00 Pro category, but the overall win ner Bob Max we ll (Bul) had th e sp ect at o rs dazzled. CMC MX Ascot Park By Mike Klinge r G ARDENA, CAL, J ULY 23 Chuck Lunde (PCH) and Tim Lunde (Yam) kept th e win nings in th e family with the two riders placing on top in the 125 Pro class Wednesday night at Ascot, Mota one holeshot went to Ed Clark (Han) who held onto the lead for three laps. Suddenly , Clark dipped too wide on a sweeper and Chuck Lunde had the lead and the win, In motos two and three, the race for the lead developed between Chuck and Tim , w ith Tim first off the gate both times. Tim led each mota with Chuck trying everythin g to get by his b ro th er; swerving radically out of turns, o vergassing off jumps and literally bumping with the Yamaha. When it was all o ver at the end of the night, Chuck Lunde was the overall winner with a 19
