By Dennis Greene Ventu ra, California July 22, 1975 At the halfway mark in the Speedway season, with fifteen weeks left to go before the , U.S. Championship, the points race is one of the closest in history. The Bast Brothers arid several other riders are locked in the lead. Steve Bast collected points Tuesday night at Ventura, winning the scratch main event over Cur oso, Sexton and Shaw. Neither Sonny Nutter, Woods, Scott Sivadge nor Mike Bast made it into either main event, where every pointis money. Only the top thirty-two riders will make it to the qualifying rounds, and only the top sixteen men will race the National. The handicap races are important as well, for the points earned there are carried over to the total. Dave Sims won it at Ventura this week. The feature match race put Sonny Nutter up against Steve Bast, and the two-lap sprint went to Nutter. Indian Dunes, Californ ia July 23, 1975 Dean York rules the Dunes. In the past five weeks he has dominated one or both main events every night. This week Dean took the handicap main over Craig Schaffer. Craig won the scratch main over Russ Duronslet, Danny Waller and Gene Gallina. Mike Petticord took the Division Three match from Terry Bilton. Irwindale, Californ ia July 24, 1975 "Wild Bill" Cody went home the happy winner of the Handicap Main, coming from the 30 . And to think that he nearly didn't make it to the Semi. His heat was taken by Ric k Woods fro m the 40 while Mark Cherry was second and Cody third, Then th ings were tigh t in the Semi when, after an incredible f'ou r-l ap duel with everyone in contention, Steve Colu mbo crashed while in the lead. Mike Curoso then took over with Cody second and Woods third. Bruce Penhall laid it down heading for the finish line, slid across still holding on to the bike and was given credit with fourth, just ahead of Cherry. With a great start, Cody soon overtook Mike Muntean in the Main and that pair finished that way. Mike Konle got third after a little jousting between Woods and Curoso dropped them back to fourth and fifth. The Scratch Main got back to normal as it was Jeff Sexton returning to his familiar role as leader. His win was his third in four weeks. He went in the underdog, however. Steve Bast, Curoso, Billy Meister and Bruce Penhall were the heat winners. Woods then bested Curoso to make the Main from the first Semi and Sexton scored the second Semi win . Jeff drew the pole slot and that was just about all he needed. Curoso challenged early and then had more of a battle holding back Woods than he did of catching Sexton. Mike Konle was fourth . Costa Mesa, Californ ia July 25 , 1975 Two of the littlest riders in Speedway walked off with the two big events at the Fairgrounds. Mark Cherry had been running second most of the season but th is Friday nig ht it was his turn to sit in Victory Circle after a great ride in the handicap m ain even t, His win over Scott Sivadge, Bill Meister, So nny Nutter, Randy Marsh and Mike Bast will m ove hi m out of the bottom spot in the pain ts race . The same is true for Dubb Ferrell. He got his IITst scratch main event win of the year, beating three of the best. Mike Bast, two-time U.S. Speedway Champ grumped in for second with Rick Woods for third and Wild Bill Cody fo urth. Bakersfield, California Ju ly 26, 1975 For the second week in a row, Sonny Nutter successfully defended the Purple Helmet in the two-lap feature match race. This week Lany Shaw lost two straight to Nutter in the best two out o f three sprin ts. Home-town-hero George Ferrell won the Division Two main event, beating the arch villain from Taft, Gran t Salyers. First Division handicap h onors bel onged to Mark Cherf, after a horrendous crash in which Bill Meister hit Cherf. Meister did n ot m ake th e restart because of a bruised wris t . Rick Woods was the cente r o f controversy when he was no t allowed a two-minute hold because the referee did no t see h is h and up , signifying that he wanted time ou t. Every one in the stands saw Wood 's hand in the air, but the re feree's error kept Woods ou t of the handicap h alf of the show. Like the champion he is, Rick le t it go and came back strong to win the scratch main. The IITSt three laps were led by Jim Fishback, who seemed well on his way to victory when his motor blew in the 100 degree climate. Resul ts in Resul ts Section •
