S.I.R. night MX By Sue Sykes KENT, WASH ., JUNE 18 June 18th was Photo Night at Seattle International Raceway. But racin g was the main course for the evening and the 250 and Op en Pro race ca p ture d most of the attention. Fourteen racers rode a total of 18 laps. Mark Kaestner (Ya m) rode third for six laps in moto one, then was able to . ge t by Todd Sn yder (C. A) and Charles Strayer (Mo n) in a slick maneuver. By this time Blain e Elledge (C-A ) had worked his wa y through aft er a bad start and passed Snyder o n the long back run. This put th e first rna to scoring at Kaestner, Elledge, and Snyder. The fun wa s on again when these stars pulled dow n the starting run an d made tha t first right han der, This was the last race of the evening and to repeat the old saying - "they saved t he be st for t he last. " 250 Pro Snyder took t he lea d and went wire to wire for firs t overall. Elledge got in a little earlier b ut was still running back in his class - and at ti mes an Open bike ke pt him from a pass . By lap seven Blaine was third and he kept pouring it on. The pipe was just . hangin ' on by now and took a beating with every jump. By the end of the race the pipe was sideways to the bi ke and rider. Snyder took th e flag, Elledge third and Craig Bosler rode his Husky to a second. Snyder has already qualified for the Can Am prize money - now he 's wo rki ng on the new bike division. Op en Pro win went to Dave Bunker (Hus ) . with a two-one scoring. The 100 classes rode t oge t her and the unusual happened in the mota two start. When the ra cers cleared the st art ing tum they all punched it but first mota B winner Brad Hoyt (Suz ) and 100 C rider Jeff Pugh (Suz). Brad hopped righ t up and called for the referee. Pugh sat up - as best he co u ld and the red flag Came o ut. The med ics ran to help - stretchers and all. But wh at this rider needed was a mechanic and his wre n ches. Jeff fou nd his left leg caugh t be tw ee n shock and wheel of Hoyt's Suzuki. A q uick rem oval of t he shock and Pugh, was ready t o race. T his time both racers got off to a better start. Oh, yes .; t hey wai ted while the go ing to Scott Henry (Bul) who grabbed the hole shot and led one lap of the fir st rna to before dropping to sixth after wat ering out twice, and th en running fifth all through the second round. • Results in Resu lts Sec ti o n. wooded ar ea. Spectators tended to ge th e r a t the most likely crash sites, th e two mud holes and the st airstepped jump. These spots were where the most p lace-swapping occurred, m ain ly due to ignition problems as bike afte r bike watered out. 125 Expert Mike Hers man (lion) was the class win ner with a th ird and a fo urt h fin ish. In th e fir st mota Danny "Magoo" Chandler, newl y seated by Yamaha In te rnational on th eir 125 Mon os hock, wor ked up a tre me ndo us lead. Hersman led t he rest of t he pack, up until the last lap wh en Tom Bragdon (Yarn) go t by hi m fo r the checkered. Finishing fourth behind Hersman was AI lIall (lion) who had come up from eighth, and fifth, Cloyse Holland (Suz) who had been run nin g third until hi s ch ain dislocated at the sta irsteps, The second mota was a whole new story. Magoo crashed in the first lap and was two laps down before he could get ba ck in the race. Holland took the lead and held it until Bill Swartz (Yarn) got by him just befo re the white flag. Then Arnold Plant (Yarn) passed just before the chec kered. Magoo, although riding like the wind and picking up one and one-half of his two lost lap s finished fifth overall. Dave Longco r (Hus) led both 250 motos for two wins and the top money. Second p lace cash in this class we~t to Pat Wilson (Ho n) with ~ thi rd in the firs t mot~ aftf;! iCveraJ u ps and downs and. a second in t he second moto a fter giving his lead to Longcor in the fo ur th lap. David Carlson (Hus) came u p fro m 10t h in bo th ro unds to finis h fourth/sixth for third overall. Kent Classen (Mon) hel d out fo r second all the way in the firs t round but slipped back from t hird to eighth in the second, still taking fo urt h m on ey with fifth OAKDALE, CAL.,J UNE 2 1 Fenn Pervier grabhed the win in th e 360 Expert class and that feat added to hi s third pl ace finish in the 250 l\Iain gave Fenn top ho nor s in the Expe rt division tonight. Though some familiar face s were missing because of regio nal co mpetitio n at Castle Ro c k and the h alf-mile at San J ose Su nday, new faces such as Pervier, Ferroni, Ferguson and othe rs showe d to give the fans a real racy evening. Honda ride rs Carl Ye rby an d Steve Ferr o ni fo llo wed Pervier in th e 360 Main. This even t was an eli m inat io n co ntest as four racers p ulled o ut with engine problems. The 25 0 Expert event provid ed a bit m ore excitement as yo ung Rod ger Slack chased Mo de st o 's Dennis Huff for ab out seve n laps and we n t by in the pit tu m . Dennis then held off Pervier and Harley-mounted Craig Sc roggi ns fo r the final four laps and the seco nd place payo ff . Novice and Junior racers showed fan s wh at is to co me in the future as several riders turned in ex cellent performances. In the 60 Junior·Expert combo Mike Bird t ook his third straight win bu t had his strongest competition tonight fro m Monark rider Kevin Brink and Expert Chris Carr. Brin k pressured Mike for the entire eve nt but could never slip by. Carr pressed hard enough tc t.aii in t he p it tum and drop cffthe pace . Pr:.obab!y the most exciting race of . - ~h" eve ni ng was staged by Terry " Quick Throttle" Adams. Terry laid back fo r five laps and then charge d fro m a fifth place position , picking off riders at wi ll. On th e final lap, however . he ran out of time as Modesto's Ron Jorge gained eno ugh drive o ut o f the final tum to ni p Adams by a wheel at t he line.
