There was one o ther injury, an un identifi e d rider was hurt whe n during th e start o f th e 125 Jun iors , a front pla ce rider in th e class o f 18 bobbled over the jump sending riders down, riders over t he edg e a nd o thers down on top of th em. We were unable to learn the extent of the boy 's injury. Brad Turnadg fr om The Dalles couldn 't be sh aken loose of first place in th e 250 Novice and he went all the wa y. 125 rider Ken Ringer from Gaston was holding a rippin' lead in his fi rst moto and guess what he did? He ra n out of gas ! Couldn 't get a co m me n t from h im but his Mo m h a d p le nty t o say . .. words l i k e "justifi able ho micide! ,. Medford dominated the Open classes with five of seven riders in the co m b ined Junior and Expert classes. Gary Wilks gave Mark Mattheisen a tussle but Mark go t a one/one and then tangled in the Preston Petty starting cables. Mark wa s badly shaken when the cabl es c a u g h t the pipe in the bounce-back and the starter grabbed the red flag. Before the riders cam e bac k around, it was decided to let the race go o n and Mark could just putsey arou nd the 15 min utes because he had first place all sewed up. No one was ' very happy abo ut that decision least of all Mark, who doesn't like to putsey, period! It was announced in Medford that all profits from the l\IRA two-day qualifier would be taken to Portland and divided am o ng those riders signing in at Portland who had qu alified on the Medford track, to help defray expenses. Zip Spo rtsman racers on the smooth San J ose half-mile barely missed the 400 mark in numbers with 17 classes receivin g either a beautifu l tr ophy or so me money for the opening of Semi-pro season. The three b ig Expe rt classes were won by Rick Delacy , 250 Expert, Rodger Sla ck, 3 6 0 "A"; and Steve Carrillo taking th e " B" portion by a ton. The entire show went off without 100 m any problems and despite a lat e st ar t , it was co m p le te d just past five p.m, The only b ad par t o f the day came wh en Kim Jorgen sen go t hit in the leg while running th e ~Iain and m ay have bro ke n it. li e is curren t ly leading the Blac k Plat e po in t series for scra m bles and this litt le di versio n may have bee n cost ly. In the "A" Main Rodger Slack (Yam) ran a way a nd h id with Fenn Pervier surviving an earlier foot hurt to take seco nd over AI Kenyon. Mike O'Brien managed a fourth after a heat race problem, and Dave Nazzisi was a cre dible fifth on the Pypeline special. The "B" Main was held up fo r a few m inu tes to inspect t he first tum. On the first lap. of the "A " M ain, Ric k Silv a dropped some gearbox oil b ut it wasn't bad enough to bother the riders who ran the 10 lap s. An yw ay, just to be sure, the brooms were brought out and the portion swept. Ro y T abo ad a to ok th e early point, having be en t he o n ly rid er left on the fro n t row, but he was closely chased by Bo b Scally , Ch uc k Kole an d Steve Ca rr illo . J ohn Gu glielmetti led the first lap with J or gensen dis appearing in a sh u ffle th at eventuall y required th e a m b u lance while the Delacy brothers held second and third. Little brother Mike took third behind Pat Hennen who made some fan cy moves to work up to that spot. Enough 3 6 0 Juniors made the scene to make for two separate p rograms with J im Mahoney winning th e " A " afte r a battle wit h Pat La wler tha i left Law le r o ut of th e race . Lawle r an d Mah on ey d iced the first th ree lap s and go t whooshed by Gary Pietrusz kiew icz, (if yo u can't handle tha t lo n g nam e , j ust try Piet], Lawler d ropped out on the sixth lap while Mahoney got righ t with Piet and took the check ered first with Steve Harvey a good distance in front of Bernd Koegler. ' In the "B" Main Scott Nelson got around J o hn Nunnes on the, fo urth lap past the start line and st retched his lead to earn h is Expert card at the end of the race . Best dog fight of the d ay had to be the 125 Novice with no less than fo ur leaders on the first two laps. frank Hannah got the jump with Luie Mazur, David Cascio and Ronnie Rohr all keeping him honest. Cascio took the second lap with Rohr moving by Hannah an d Mazur trying to hold on as Gu y Miller and Mickey Krusemann mo ved through the pa ck to challenge. Miller was about to put it on everyone when his Elsinore gave up the ca use, putting Bill Wainscott in second behind Hannah. Then on the white flag la p Mazur pulled out all the stops and went by Wainsco tt. Ha nnah d ropped to fo urth at the ch ec ke red a nd Ro hr co pped third leaving Kruse m ann w it h an em pty fift h abou t a fo ot short. Ken Netto led the first five rounds of the 125 Expert Main bu t failed to finish leavin g To ny Alves and the Rocky Cycle Yamaha an easy win over Rick Delgado . Bill Wainscott ca me back for another tr y in the 200 Novice Main and had a good battle with Gary Pedrick until Pedrick moved out fo r the win.
