"As co n te nde r s for th e state Ch ampionsh ip, yo u 11 get th e chance to co m pe te in on e o f four events: 100cc, 125 cc, 25 0cc and Op en in Beginner, J uni or and Expert Classes. T op fini shers will receive scholars hi p s, t ro phies and pri zes. " Un quote. Yamaha de alers faithfu lly ann ounced the news an d to q uo te Yamaha International aga in .. . . "e ligib ility requ ire me nts : Ore gon st ude nts, grade s 9-11." Un quo te. Su spicions were aro used when riders began to recei ve th eir packets of forms and information (t wo of which had to be notarized) and supposedly, three pit passes. Th ose passes were no t in half o f the packets but it reall y didn 't make any differen ce because th ey wer en 't needed anyway . Also, in those p ac kets was the go od news . . . . clarifi cat ion of j ust which top finish ers would receive scholarships: th e Expe rts o n ly , and only the top rider in those Expert cl asses . A call was pl aced to Yamaha Internat ional at Buena Park abo u t the pit passes and the advertising which led most to believe the top fini sh er in classes an d th eir di vi si ons w ould re cei ve: scholarships. The man himself was out of town b u t a sec re ta ry informed us that it was n ot sp ecified in th e adver t ising which top finish ers would receive scholarships and there fore was not false ad vertis ing. Kids readi ed bikes, parents had papers no tari zed, sch oo ls furnished proof that John o r J oe or Sam were studen ts in th e ir establish me nt, p iggy banks were cracked open an d we all headed fo r Portlan d. That's whe n th ings go t a bit mo re weird ! Wh en qualifie d qualifiers from ce ntral and so u th ern Or egon arrived at the track, they found th at Po rtland area kids had simply go ne to a Yam ah a dealer, picked up the information shee ts an d th ey we re qu alified. No meets, no rigamorole, no nothing. Hardly fair for those in the tw o areas wh o had to go t hro ugh tw o-day even ts to earn th e righ t t o ride at Po r tl a n d. But o n th e se cond day .. . . boy , th at di d it! Since there were barely 50 riders o n Saturday for the 100 an d 25 0 classes, everyon e th ere was asked to ca ll all th eir high sch o ol buddies who rode th e 125 or Open classes and it was open sign-up fo r an yone wh o wanted to ride . . . even high schoo l studen ts fr om th e state of Washingt on ! The explanat ion for th at , very simple . Quoting from th e gentleman in cha rge from Cali fornia, Mr. Tom Smith . . . . . " they ride at th is track all the time, they are so close and Oregon didn 't produce enough riders." Let it be known right here an d no w that three weeks prior to this Yam ah a bit, Honda hosted a simil ar mee t an d there were over th ree hundred riders each day of t he two day event ! So don ' t te ll us we do n ' t have en o ugh Orego n riders ! Sa turda y 's sign -in was o n ly an ho ur late getting starte d and t hat wasn ' t bad consid ering the fir st moto (which was to have st arted at 10:30) did n 't - u n til 12 :04 p.m, I t was rip-city in t he sn ac ks depart ment, t oo - 25t fo r candy bars, 75t or $ 1.10 fo r h o t dogs d epend ing on whe ther yo u wan ted t iny o r regular size , 60t fo r small cokes an d S I fo r large ones , 25t for a co up le of swallows of coffee, etc. et c. 'Course th at co uld n 't have bee n th e fault of Yamaha. They were running t he rac ing , no t the concessio ns . Lest we fo rge t, what th e kids worked so h ard f or . . .. th e sch o larshi ps, t ro phies and prize s. \Ve never saw prize one, of any kind, nor were any m ent io n ed. The trophies were mislabeled plus the fa ct that they must have been in a wreck on the way to the tra ck be ca use two that we know of came apart in the rider 's hands. Three trophies were paid in each class division no matter how many riders. There was o ne trophy worthy of a Ya maha International High School Motocross Championship, a gorgeous thing that -; • -= ~ t l..'"l r--C'l ~ >. :::::l ~ .. - • ~ * ' NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MILE SUNDAY, JULY 20 • CAL EXPO STATE FAIRGROUNDS SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA SEE YOUR FAVOR ITE RIDERS COMPET IN G FO R ONE OF T HE LA RGEST PURSES IN 0 1RT T RACK H ISTOR Y .
