As the day wo und t o a close he took ano ther overall win as he / beat a hard-eh arg in g Don Cantaloupi at Live Oak 's t wist y co urse. Cantalo upi led in the earl y st ages of ' moto one as Danny wo rke d his way thro ugh th e pack and in to th e seco nd sp ot. In the closing stages of the mo t o Magoo m ad e his move . With the aid o f a crash by Can t aloup i, he narro wed down Don's lead an d took th e win, divin g und er De n 's Can -Am as the duo hit th e back sect io n of the course. Magoo, who is now s p o nso re d i n p art b y Yamaha International , w as in to tal command as he p leased the large crowd with his high leap ing crossed-u p jumps. Delno Becker broke tonight while lea d ing the 250 Experts in their fir st moto . Delno had gotten away last · off the lin e an d had ridden h is way up through the p ack with great skill only to lose it all when his CZ lost spark. Bob Brid ges took th e moto win but finished ou t of the troph ies with a poor showing in th e seco nd go-ro und . Gene McKenzie took the overall on his fun ky white Bultaco followed by a co nsisten t Eddie Brown (Hon) in second. Gerald Rhone took a well deserved win in the first 125 Novice class tonight. Aided by terrific hole shots he won bo th motos over Yamaha mounted Dave Coker and Gary Elliot. Elliot h ad to work hard fo r that spot as he fell at the start in the first moto. Rich Hammersmith of Team Cobby was on his way to winning th e Open Novice class until he fell with just a few laps remaining in the final moto. Rapid Rich was too tired to get his G.P. Maico going again and lost the win to Ke ith Buchanan riding for that "other shop," Iron Horse Cycle , on a CZ. • Results in Results Section . - - Lucky 13 Series, race 13 By Sue Sykes PUYALLUP, WASH., JUNE 27 26 "Luck y 13" winners picked up their awards Friday in the final race o f the Series. Either rider cou ld win th e series with an evening's first ove rall . Weidman (Hon) settled fo r a fourth in moto one but Snyder (CA) was down with a seventh. ' When the 25 0 Pros left the line again things looked pretty grim for Snyder and a stall going in to the rust tum let it all fly over the berm. Weidman didn 't ge t out in front either and by the end of lap one he was running in fourth again . Nex t time ar o und first moto winner Rick Benek (Pen ) was out in front of Weidman. A quick add of score s ta llied Weidman running fifth overall - not good enough for a series win. The guy s out in front Blaine Elled ge (C-A), Tom Peterson (Yam ), and Craig Bosler (Hus) didn't have series poin ts on their minds, j ust the race and the nigh t's prize money . Then all of a sudden Benek was down this last lap stroke of whatever put Weidman in fourth - go o d enough for fourth ove rall . But the great part ab o ut the fo urt h ove rall is th at - it was worth 3 0 0 points -- and a tie with Nolen for first series win. Puyallup Raceway Park awar ded two Gold Cards to both Pro riders - good for fees a t Puyallup , Kent, and Portland the rest of the yea r. Mini B rider Perrish Anderson had a 1700 point lead in the Min i class and rode the last series night in the Supers. Rowland Specialties o f Aub urn donated a $200 gift prize to th e class and Perrish said he's alread y app lied the cash on a new fram e for his Yamaha. B High Point racer Marv in Sy kes fini sh ed th is series wi th a win in hi s 125 class. In rnoto on e Sy kes challenged Terr y Haakenson (Ho n) th e en ti re race Some guy s just like t o get off and d o their o wn thing. and the two really put on a show. In moto two Sykes took the lead from the gate. Don't ever tell Sykes - "W ide Open" again. He rode th e last t wo and one-half laps just that way when the throttle adjuster backed out. Wow! Took both hands and both feet to hold that Elsinore back. An yway, the moto win gave Sykes rust overall and 5900 points. The three rail b ike trailer donated for the class was from Kent Cycle, Kent, Washington. . The C class went down to the last bit, too. Ric Dittman - 125 Honda rider went into the last night with 5500 poin ts and Open rider Kevin Collins • (Yam) with 5300 points. Collins walked away with his first moto and put Dittman to shaking his head after a lousy start and a fifth in his class. But Dittman got it on in the next round, grabbed t he lead and kept it . Collins scored another first for first overall and 600 points but it wasn 't en ough to get by Dittman's seco nd overall and 500 points. The complete head to toe MX duds for the C class overall winner were donated by Fereral Way Suzuki. Yamaha Dirt DaysHSMX By Ly nne Diltz PORTLAND, ORE.,j UNE 21-22 Yamaha Dirt Days is over and with it the Oregon High School Motocross Championships which ended as a Yamaha-ha-ha Championship. Rules and regulations governing the two qualifying meets were strict and riders from Albany south to the Californ ia border obeyed or didn't "qualify. " Yamaha International was a bit slow in getting out the necessary information in the first place and despite all-out efforts on the part of local Yamaha dealers, n o one knew ab o ut the meets until a few days before they we re actually hel d at Asbury Park in Albany and Medford Motocross P ark in Medford . Consequently , in areas heavily populated with motocross riders of hig h school age , only 45 showed up at Medford and less than 30 at Albany. Apparently a feeble attempt was made for a qualifier of so rts in- the Portland
