Staten co mp letely do mi nated the 50 0 Pro cla ss with berserko cross-up s and berm-busting riding to outlast the field of 17 Pros. Saddleback's 500 Pro winner just two weeks I ago , J on Derhamme r (Mai) gra bbed the lead in moto one an d held on for six laps . Doug She rman [Mai], Rex St aten (CZ), Gary Ogden (Yam) , Bill Rubly [Mai ] and Bill Clements (Hus) all had good positions to take the lead if an y mistakes were made. But it was Sl aten bombing past Derhammer in the air off a ju mp to take over the lead an d win the mo to. Derhammer finished second, Sherman third an d Clements fourth , Staten snatched the lead rig ht off the ba t in moto t wo an d n o other rider co uld possibly catch him. Once in to th e rac e, th e standings never cha nge d . Staten flew away wit h t he win , Derhammer ha d second on the day and Clem ents' co nsistent fini shes earned him t hi rd overall an d some take ho m e b ucks. A t hree -one co mbi natio n of finis hes by Bob Ellio tt (Hus) ena b led him to be the 250 Pro winne r. Elliott lead mo to one, but was closely la iled by Jeff Vidic (Mai) an d Bob Stem (CZ). Within one lap Stem became the new leader and eventual winner, with Vidic hanging on 10 second and Elliott dropp ing to third. Vidic was ru nning away with mo to two when all of a sudde n "Maico Breako" - second gear was stripped. Elliott gladly took ove r the lead with Bill Rubly (C·A) and Val Tamietti (Mai) goin g for broke. Rubly unloaded over the bars and Stern gained the th ird position. 27 125 Pro riders converged on the first turn and anyone rider co uld have taken the trophy . Bruce McD o ugal (Yam ) was the lucky o ne and fini shed on top after two fine motos. McDo ugal was well into the pack in mo to one with Warren Reid (Ho n ) in front , Gary Denton (Hon) second and Mike Bell (L BH) in third. Re id misjudged a be rm and McDougal shot inside and to ok o ver the lead and he ld o n fo r t he victory. The action in mo to two was all Dan Turner's (lion) from th e d rop of the gate 10 the checkere d. The hard charging Reid was seco nd, Alle n Smith (Hon ) was thi rd an d McDougal was p ick in g off rid ers on e-by-one to tak e fo u rth. Bu t somewhere along the line, the perm ission was revoked an d th e clu b had to scramble to pu t on .an acce ptable enduro with a short time rem ain in g. Th ey ende d up running basically th e same loop twic e, which isn't as bad as it so un ds. I interviewed on e of th e six rangers who showed up at th e star t line to chec k sp ark arrest ors and he sta ted th e Fores t Service was willi ng to work with t he clu b in putting on the race but they had no t rece ived a course m ap fro m the clu b. I hope the F orest Service and the Pathfinders can wor k o u t their differences, so me give and take fro m both sides will go a long way in resolving any problems.
