The rid er s wh o came wit h their ro Il charts were just ou t of luck. The lend u ro used jus t speed change signs to p ost th e required average. Since this is a to taIly di ffe ren t time keeping sy stem than th e ro Il chart m e thod, it was time to learn th e Bob Steffan m eth od (do it m y ou r head), or just enj oy the ride and fo rge t ab ou t tim ekeepin g. I d id both. First on e, the n th e oth er. The Pathfinders laid ou t a really fun en du ro co urse whi ch was ch allengin g a t times. Esp ecially th e second tim e around. They s tar ted y o u off down narrow tight trails whic h m ade me wish I h ad cu t a couple of inch es off of m y dese rt b ars. Not too much wat er was enc o un tered but dus t was a p roblem at times. Th e sec tio n s were laid o ut in p atterns it seeme d. A to ugh tigh t sec tio n and t he n fire road s to m ak e up th e tim e. The fir eroads wer e so m ewhat boring if yo u were on time bu t fun if y o u were beh ind and had to gas it. The hardest part I h ad to get used to was du cking my h ead to avo id the low hanging bran ch e s. I alm ost go t kn ocked off my b ike a co up le of times as I blindly ran in to some big lim bs as I was crouc hed over my tan k. What p reven ts th e Chi cken Endu ro from becoming a prestige ty pe run is the ra th er loose way the endu ro is ru n. T h is I S not a kn ock, if you came expecting a super serious run you were at the wrong en du ro. The Pathfinders admi t the y ju st tr y an d pu t on a good ride an d don 't worry abo ut a lot of technicalities. If I y ou don't be lieve me, th e chec k locations prove it. At an 18 MPH ave rage th e first two che c ks were located at 14 and 28 m iles o u t. No w th at just doesn't wo r k out to an eve n ten th an d an even min ute, n o way . But th e club just shrugs it off. On e ira te ride r wanted to pro tes t and the club didn ' t even wan t to acce pt it. That really b le w his min d. They final ly took it bu t told him q uite blu n tly it wouldn't do any go od. T he re was qui te a bit of course cu tting on the second loop as riders tried to m ak e up time af ter they go t beh in d a bottlenecked hill. Th e course wou ld tu m off of a fir ero ad , run in the woods for a wh ile and co me back ou t. If y ou were familiar with the area y o u could eas ily by pas s the section saving muc h tim e. I passed on e ride r three times on the second loop. He never passed m e o n th e tr ail. A ch ec k or two located in th e woods would elimi nate th at pro blem co mp le tely. At tim es the scene ry was just m agni ficent. So me of the trail s wound up h igh o n the mountain offering a view of th e wh ole are a. The des ert riders who m ad e th e long drive up re ally apprecia te d it. The Chick en Enduro is a rather nice way to spen d a weekend if you don 't ge l too serio us abo u t en duroi ng. If you stay loose an d just try to h ave a good tim e it will be forthcoming. The ride itse lf is a lot of fun an d I hi gh ly reco m me n d it. Nex t year I'll brin g my Dial-Adinduro along and even try to keep on time. I'm looking forward to it . (Continued on page 38) We do fittings.
