DiStefano , his leg heavily bandaged to protect injured cartilage. led both motos briefly before settling into second place in one of the few consistent performances of the day. After a dice and dodge race with Honda's Pierre Karsmakers for the majority of the 20 lap first moto Tony DiStefano dropped back to a seemingly secure second. DiStefano when asked why he let Pierre take the win replied, "The race was between Howerton and me for the points and I was afraid that Karsmakers and I would go down."
