He was first both times o u t on a 380 CZ that appeared more exotic (excep t for lack o f magnesium) than what the fac to ry riders have. Only Dave Ha ug h (Bu l) co uld keep Harper in his gunsights and even he finally dropped wa y bac k an d out o f con ten tion after a final moto bobble wh ile goi ng after Will. Hondas prepped b y CH Industries seemed to dominate the sprint st yl e o f the sportsman 125 classes. J oe Co zzi notched three horsepower firs ts in th e Beginner division and Jerry Shore fini shed second o nly on ce in th ree o ut ing s in th e Junior ca teg ory. Th e Harper Brothers, Will and Tom , wo n the team race at the CRC Grand Prix held at Valley Cycl e Park. Althou gh th e Mike Sixberry jDon Hansen team held a slim lead at th e end of th e first o f six laps, the y d ropp ed ou t later, aft er th e lead wen t to the Harpers (Tom on a Maico and Will on a nearly stock Honda 35 0 sin gle) . The y led al l th e way after th at , but Rick Par k an d Bill Pinckar d (125 lion and 25 0 Mai ) kept it very close . In fac t o n the last lap , des p ite th e silty uphill-downhill nat ure of th e five-mil e co u rse , Will Harper co uld no t pull o u t an y extra advan tage ove r Park's t 25 . In th e first race Of th e day , fo r Open clas s machinery, Mik e Si xb erry (Ya m) pulled o u t an early lead. Don Hicks (1\la i) was runn in g seco nd until he cen terpunched a co w o n the back part o f t he co u rse, down near th e riverb ed . Hicks was unhurt, but dropped out of the ra ce. J im Jackson (Hon ) kept very , close to Sixberry for the res t of the race and act ually led fo r a ti me after Sixberry pitted. Steve Van Worm e r (CZ) dis locate d h is shoulder in the early laps, but rode the remainder of the hour one-handed. Altho ugh d o wn in the pack, he still fin ished third Expert. The ambulance a t t en dan t popped it back in place for him aft er the ra ce . In 2 50 ac t io n, J im O'Neal (C A) and Don Hansen (Mai) went at each o ther like it was a 15-minute mo to , swap p in g the lead back and forth un t il Hansen dropped ba ck to third. O'Neal co uld not rela x as Rick Long (Mon ) moved up quickly to apply pressure. O'Neal took the win , th o ugh. Bill Pinckard (Mai) sta yed up wit h the Expert lead e rs on his way to a Novi ce win. Evan Mar cus (Hon) m oved out quickly and had a healthy lead o n the 125 pa ck as they co mpleted t he fi rst loop. Marcus seemed to be tiring arou nd the halfway point as Rick Park (Ho n ) went b y for th e lead and the win , with Marc us han gin g o n fo r seco n d. J e rry Little reall y did a job o n a Honda mini, running well up in th e order to finish first in the 100 Beginner Un de r 16 class. The final race of the da y was the Over The Hill Gang, with "Lan ky _ Larry" Shoemaker (4 0 0 Yam) wi nnin g by a hu ge margin. "Gorilla Gary " Cole (Mai) e n ded up second. As for the ra ce, they had a very fast bomb run , because if you weren 't in fifth gear 10 0 yards o ff the start, y ou were getting passed! Kim McCl ean (Hus) was the first one to th e bo mb, with alri ght Art Kn app (H us) second. The rest of the fast guys weren 't ar ound (A.C., Ke vin Hastin, Ron Wright) seems that they 're goi ng to have a race in Strange things happen t o people in th e desert when th ere's a Lunar eclipse.
