Mexico called the Baja 500 and they all went down for some practice! Come to think of it, there was this guy off to the left on the bomb we couldn't quite figure out, who it was, or how he got there! Well, its perfectly legal - they said simply because the course went to the left, none other than LiI Andy Kirker on his 250 Mono was in the hunt. The course st ayed WFO for the first loop giving the 400's the edge. So at the end of forty mil es it was Kim with a one mi nute lead, but th at was soon to change. On the seco n d loop it got a little tighter and Kim fall down and go boom. In doing so he let Andy and Art go by. This gave Kim the opportunity to meet some people coming up fro m a bad start, like Doug Winchell (Hus). The two had a terr ific battle for third for the better part of te n miles, with the short end of the stick going t o Mr . McClean. The next two places in Div I went respectively to the desert wizz kids Larry Roesler and Bruce Ogilvie (H-D). Skipping down to the Trail class it was Chris Weber fo r first wi th a very good lead. IILIFI I I RVI N E, CAL., MAY 15 Estancia High came out to prove they are team number one and did just th at. Th eir rid ers were really flying, taking three first s, a second and a third overall out of six races. These guys are so hot, Estancia High had better put in an order for a larger trophy case . Superbowl fever has tak en over O.C.l.R. and with July 18 drawing closer, the racing is ge t ti n g very serious. At the start of th e night 's races, Mark Taylor (Kaw ), point lead er in the 250 Junior class, had a t otal of 53 0 points out of a necessary 600 to qualify . Taylor looked like an eas y shoo-in to be the fir st qu alifier in the second series. Nineteen were qualified in the first series. In the first mota, all was not well and he DN Fed. The second mota, he carne on st ro ng for an easy win givin g him 50 points. Only 20 more points needed to qualify. A fourth place in the third mota would h ave done it . He was hot off the line and led the first three laps, but this was not to be his night. He had bike problems and had to settle for an eighth place, still leaving him short 20 p o ints. In th e 125 Expert class, it was Robert Marino (Han) all the way. He was slow off the lin e in each mo ta , but carn e on heavy in ea ch of the three mo tos. These th re e firsts moved hi m in to fi rst p lace in the point standings fo r the Superbowl qualifying with 460 points. Brad Dutoit (Hon], a q ualified rider from the first series, took second overall and Vince Van Hook th ird . Freebies are still a big part of the good things happening at O.C.I.R.
