Enduroing product evaluations S&W fork kit (Honda) M R -175& other assorted tales Yo u read it first in this co lum n abou t the coming of the MR· 175 , now another "first." Look for Honda to spring a similar type bi ke except it will be a four stroke 175 with superb handling lik e the MR . Also the light weight. Maybe n o t quite as light as th e MR but close. Th e XL series will also be redesigned and hopefully be be tter for enduro type riding, An ~IR·250 is co ming and it is die -no-mite ! Move d up shocks, power close to an Elsinore but with enduro grunt, and weighin g in at around 220 p ounds. The XL-250 and 350 mi ght h ave ce nte r port heads for better air flow . Greenhorn Enduro It 's just about time for the 'Horn again. Due to last year's chec k and scoring screwups, the run this ye ar will carry no sanction from the MIA. I'm hoping the Pasadena MC gets it all back together and the run again will be a point en duro , It h as a lot of tradition behind it. The club is working very hard to m ak e it su ccessful this year and I wish them goo d lu ck. I know the run will start in the Devore are a of Cajon Pass and I have heard rumors of the run going to Big Bear and down Rattlesnake Creek (the site of the old Big Bear Hare and Houn d). See you there l Factory Honda enduro rider J ay Tullis first recommended this fork kit to me . He had a pair installed in his MT·250 and was quite imp ressed with them. Being the curio us type, I went down to S&W and picked up a pair for testi ng. The Honda kit fit s CR-250, MT·250, XL·250 and 350. Thc only thing different for each bike is the spri ngs . The ra tes are di ffe rent for the heavier XL Ho ndas. Installation is qu itc simple. J ust repl ace the damper rods and springs with t he S&W units. S&W recom me nds 10 weigh t fo rk oil. The trick da mper rods have a reed valve to co n trol oil flow and it 's impressive. The forks seems to work best when working their hardest. You know, slam m ing in to ditches, e tc. St ock Honda forks are not known for their superior damping in these circumstances, but the S&W kit makes all the difference in the world. Since installing the fork kit. I have run my XL- 3 50 in a number of events including the Rcd Gar ter National, and th e Great Bear Grand Prix which was a go od test. The forks workcd to the tune of a trophy. . While the fork kits are expensive a t about $60 retail, y o u get precision machined damper rods and the best fork spri ngs in the business. What price handling, eh? Big River gas tank The biggest reason I bought a Big River gas tank over a year and a half ago was that it wasn 't a "universal " type bolt o n tank, it was inade for the Honda. The front mounting slots are molded into the tank leaving just a rear mount to bc fabri cated. A bungee cord works right fine . The th ree and one-half gallon tank has held up through some two dozen enduros, Barstow to Vegas, three or four Grands Prix, numerous desert races, an d a whole lot of enduro marking sessions. A trip to Baja was in there so m ewhe re . Th e tank has never leaked, come loose or bro ken the few times I have been unfortunate cnough to crash test it. The stock gas ca p fits, eliminating the extra cost o f a custom gas cap , an d it doesn' t leak. The single petcock is located o n the left side an d is placed so it doesn't interfere with th e engine. While d ual pe tcocks mi gh t be a little m ore desi rable for total fuel drai n in to th e carb, it elimi n ate s th e possibility o f an extra gas lin e an d fittin g to lea k.
