T he regular speedway show aga in saw a fine race between Jeff Sexton and Mike Bast as they battled for the lead in the Scratch Main even t. As it has been all season, Mike got there first, Sexton seco nd while Larry Moon took third to Bill Cody 's fourth pl ace. Rick Holbert, a new name in the speedway week. picked up the win in the Division T wo Main. It was this yo ung man's first win in the sport - the win they all loo k forward to . One more new name to add to the spo~ i ~ Bob Schwartz. He came ~o the qualifying round 10 earn a spot In the sport only to show so much talen t that in his first year he earned a d ual lice nse. allowing him to ride both First and Second Division. Hard work paid off . o nce again as Schwartz took the win in the Handicap Main. Bakersfield, California Wednesday, August 14, 1974 One more first for Bakersfield - a North versus South shootout. Or as it t urned out, a showdown that shot do wn the top six ri ders fro m th e n orth, who came to the Kern Coun ty track to race th e to p six riders in poin ts a t Bakersfield . It was a good idea considering ho w well the races went at the first of th e ye ar. There was an even t called "U.S. vs. The World " where our top rid ers went agai nst so me of t he best in th e world at th e Cos ta Mesa tr ack. This is where the similarity ended, though. The south sh o t down the north li ke sitting ducks. A total of 83 for the south ver sus 25 for th e north gives you so me idea o f th e meeting. This is not to say that there was not some fin e racing turned in during the twenty-event program. Most of the race s were close , but in 19 of the 20 events a southerner cr ossed the finish line first. Fourteen times it was the south running 'up , also, and running one-two , picking up five po ints ea ch time. Mike and Steve Bast were the toppers , finishing the night with '1 7 points each. Low points for the night was a n orthern re serve rider, Dale Stetler, who ended up the meet with one point.
