Ross won t he Scratch Main ' event in a th ree-way duel for the lead wi th Nelson Fonte a n d Rand y Marsh. The Sec ond an d Third Divi sion rid ers d o p ut o n o ne hell o f a show with so m e of the wildest crashes in al l o f _speedway. Rick's form is still a bi t ragged on the small tracks hut o n the hig oval at Irwindale he is a del ight to watch . His win in the Scratch Main event ove r Bill Cody and Dubb Ferrell was a we ll-fought victory. Seco nd .Division racing is always a fine part of the show for the fans and Bob Schwartz, Tuesday night's victor in the Handicap Main . was on his way to his second win of the week when he was ' o ve rt a ken by Randy Marsh . a regular winner in Di vision Two events. Even with an additional ten yards on his starting position, Randy proved he is rea dy for a Division One showing. Ro nn ie Mo o re of New Zealand co m peted T hursday night but failed to ea rn a ride in either Ma in . He was in the !\latch Race against Bill Gray and turned in a fin e ride fo r the win. A ver y happy Troy McKee took the to p spot in the Han d icap Main event fo r the fi rst time t his year at Irwindale, an d on ly his second ti me "al l season. A turnaway c ro wd saw RIck Woods moved back to the forty-yard line with Mike Bast for the first tim e this sea son . Ri ck was be aten on the st ar t by Mike, but it was Bob Schwart z on the ten-yard line taking the win in the Heat. Even t s ix was the last Handicap Heat ra ce and the fans got to see tw o -time world c ham p Ronnie Mo ore. For hi s first time on the small trac k, he turned in a great ' r ide. During a half-time interview he to ld the fa ns th at he r ides 360 yards sometimes but t ha t was th e sm all est tra c k he had ever seen in h is caree r. It was Jan Ballard taking the pot of gold in t he Handica p Main event from a top fie ld co nsisting of Mike Bast second, Mike Kon le t hird , Jeff Sexton [probably the most improved rider of the year) in fourth and Dan Becker and Larry Moon wrapping up in fifth and sixth positions. . Sexton and Becker b attled on ce more that eveni ng' in th e Scratch Main . Both riders h av e h ad a l m o s t unbelievable re cords of m aking both Mains in th e sam e night. Becker go t the glory a t the end .of the four laps, with Bill Cody making it past Jeff for second. Mike and Steve Bast were the nigh t's Feature Mat ch race . Mik e got the win af ter swapping the lead. The second Mat ch ra ce was Ronnie Moore and Ric k Woods in a rematch.
