Thad Lawren ce (Ya m) rode like gangbusters and won th e th ird heat but d idn 't figure in the Overall due to a ra ce-ending crash in the firs t heat. The 12 5 's ran together (Beginne rs and Experts) and fa st Nat e Gross of Caldwell did a sh ot on his CR -1 25M tr ac k ra cer. Gross held off Denny Lee (Hon ) and T o m Fit zgerald (Ya m) for the Expe rt trophy . Boise 's Mick Dahms came o ut o f "retir cment " to ride his buddy J ohnnie Thompson's tr ick ed o ut Yammie One-Two-F ive and put in a go od sho w for a solid first in the 125 Beginner ran ks. Mick weighs about 40 pounds m ore than T hom pso n and had to build a special pipe to m ake the machine pull his extra poundage around the track. When last heard from, Dahms was soa king in a hot tu b and using a heating p ad t o rel ieve the ac hes suffered in a sec o nd heat spill. Racing on ce every two years can be kinda hard on the bod ! The Open class was popu lated by Husky 400's, Maicos, Pur sang Mk . VII 's and other motocross bikes. The club allowed a ny type of tires to be used an d the "Jofa types" turned out in force. Harve y Pendleton (~ Iai) ca me awa y from th e fray with a n ice trophy and showed the res t of the pac k how to go around a IT track. Danny Mo ore (Ossa) did a simi lar number on the 25 0 Beginners , One highlight of the Am at eur IT was the three wheeler . e xhibition races. There were better than a half dozen of the strange looking " d une cycles" cir cu lat ing the t rack and Rich Re yno lds >(T ri-Spo r t ) came aw ay victorious . The riders loved the chan ce to run the big IT trac k whi ch is norm ally used on ly for the Northwest Regional Champi o nships in April ever y yea r. Maybe t he Ow yhee Club will st art adding a IT race t o thei r regul ar pr o gram of sho rt trac k and m otocross. Dale Wayne, looking very official in his ne w "internati on al " number ap ro n pulled o ff a win in the B (A ma te ur) . clas s o ver Mark Co m a nd his br and new Ossa. J eff Hamm ond sho wed up on his BSA Enduro-type pump an d ne arly laid the best of the crop away with some awesome rid in g. Hammond, another of those long lanky six -fo oters, got in a tre m endo us ba sh with Allen Yarrow and John Hleb o and wound up second to Jim Fole y. Fol ey is the only one of th e four who isn't six foot and was long gone a t th e start of the ten lap Main. Hlebo held second past t he halfway mark with Hammond finally getting by Yarrow. Hammond was relying on lots of ho rsepower and traction, riding high down th e long back straigh t and h o ld ing a high line through t he tight corner and ove r the jump; the infield has a shady surfa ce making a n ice cushion, and the three were like undulating waves on the seas with beau tiful unison movements . On th e si xth lap , com ing off the last turn and down the fr ont c hu te; Hammond put in on the "E lbow" and made it sti ck despite some tremendous pressure. Foley wa s never headed with Yarrow holding o ff brother Duane for third and fourth . In the 125 Junior event it looked like Randy Mamola might take the whole smear after a tremendous Heat race ride that put him ahea d of Rick Hobbs by abou t 8 seconds a t the chec kered . But it wasn 't to be in the "l ain as motocrossers Hobbs and Bill Roberts got off the line in good shape and led the e igh t Iapper (a road race at th at ) Ted Davids on put o n a win in t he 250 Expert ~I ain and a seco nd in th e 360 Exp er t. In t he ~6 0 feature, he was leading the fo rm idab le pack and made o ne sligh t error in judgement th at cos t him the d ouble win. Going down the front st ra ight with a good lead he dropped into the fir st corner on the high side , ~i vi ng Dave ,Pestoni a n opp ortunity he Jus t co uJdn t refuse. Dave stuck hi s Bultaco right under Ted and that was that. Coming ba ck for the win.in t he 250 Expert Main, Teddy was lucky to get this o ne. Lee Seide l, who won last week, led the 10 laps right up until th e last when the lop of his ca rb uretor ca m e off.
