Going up into the Gravel Hills was a roc k ledge with a small ap p etite. It a te a few bikes and a few riders but le t most through to wind their way p ast the first stop check and on into the foothills where everybody got a chance to play and some to p ush. This was all leading up to the "Downhill" an d wher e there 's a downhill, there's usually an up hill before it . As many found to their dismay, those uphills sometimes need more muscle power than horsepower. Some Novices li ke these so much , th at they were bu sily se t tin g up cam p wh en the. Experts came aroun d on th e second loop. They shouldn't worry, even the Experts occasionally have to p ush. Larry Roeseler admitted that he " had to jum p off an d run a lit tle " t o keep goi ng when th e hills were co nges te d. All th at delay and he sti ll fi nished six th Overall on a trail bike! That downhill had real pucker power, t oo. It was o ne o f th ose goodies on which you co uld kill your engi ne , loc k up both brakes an d sti ll sli de down 99% out o f control, dragging your feet and screaming. The trick was to let your engine do the screaming. After that hill, t he rest of the co urse was anticlimactic. T he Ex perts hi t the bo m b hill at 9 : 15 and Kevin Has ten was riding smooth and eas y but already ho lding a 5 second lead over the next rider, Roeseler on a 100 ! I don't know if Larry. scouted the path he took p ast the bo mb b ut it was spectacular. He we nt trhough the only place that h ad rocks but _ he never touched them, being several feet in the air at the ti m e! I haven 't seen so many m id-ai r corrections since the last tim e I went du ck hun ti ng . Also up fron t at t he bomb was Bob Balentine b ut he di dn't •make it all the way to the end as di d Hasten an d Roeseler, Co ming up out of t h e dust after a good ride was Cordis Brooks who had his o wn race goi ng with Wayne Cook for first 250. The Start, along the road going south from Fre m on t Peak was a fam iliar but good choice. The five mile run to the rea l smoke bomb (t he Dustrna kers must have a friend at the A PCD!) was q ui t e fast and the bomb located very well in a saddle at the south end of the Fremont Peak foothills. Kevin Haste n outsped and ou t lasted t he field. Andy Kirker pi ck ed up the second Div, I sp ot and seventh O verall. As best we co uld t ell at press ti me, th e fi st Ama te ur was Max r Eddy on a 175. . T h e No vices st arted abo ut 3 0 minutes la t er but th e firs t t h ree to th e bomb wer e pie-plates an d they had a fantastic lead. The Du st rna kers ch oose to start th e pie-plates wi th the Novices an d these three we re n o No vices! T he fir st green pla te was 5 5 1c. Hbwever, at the fi nish, it was Ala n Hitesalz in firs t. Alan was on a I 75 as was the seco nd Novice, Gene Ro ck. Proving t ha t it was n ot a small bike co urse was Larkin Wight wh o tip-toed h is " lit tl e " 500 Triumph int o third. First Trail Novi ce was Don Hoffman. T hese resu lts are frazitically un o ffic ial !
