T he lac k o f participants was du e, prima rily, to . the fact th at the re was a money race in Jackpot, Neva da that same day. Hosted by t he 1.r.I.A . and billed as the Cherry Festival Cross Country , the ra ce co in cid ed wi th Emmett's ( th a t's w h e r e t he o rchards are ) an n ua l blow-out. Little Gem is ri gh t next to Em mett and provides lots of ro om for riding of all ty pes. T h ere was also a trial s he ld in the afte rnoon in ano ther pa rt o f the pa rk . A fairly serious accident brought the a m bulance ou 1 early as someone bo ug h 1 it w hile p racticing p r ior to th e ra ce . Po o r fe llow broke bo t h wrists and suffered other inj u ries . Little Ge m's te rr a in is composed of sand a nd slick, hard so il .. . no t too man y rocks but 1101 to o m uc h tr ac tion when it 's dry . When they decided to bu ild a q uart er mile nat track , t hey decided to do it right and the result of th ei I' efforts and do llars got its first test under fire this Friday nigh t. The new flat · trac k w as in pretty good sh ape for its first run an d , with the ex ception of the fact th at a n ew (and unoiled) trac k te nds t o "lift" slig htly and develop some rough spots, the racers had a good time. There was the usu al problem o f dust a n d this was co u n tered with the us e of eye-st inging ca lc iu m ch loride. The Rudge brothers and their right hand man , .Jim Blakeslee, assure us that the trac k will be oiled in the very near future. With C~IC sa nctio ni ng, the quarter m ile c irc ui t should p ro vid e an en jo yable alternative to the lo cal riders. Ca ldwell's Larry Merideth d id a job o n the 3 6 0 class in winning th e Main. Larry rides a sano 350 Hond a in a tri ck frame and has the distinction of being reigning Id ah o State Flat T rack Ch ampion afte r his win at the Owyhee Club's 1/8 mile last Fall .
