Canadian half mile on a limestone track VANCOUVER, B.C.•JUNE 16 With sixty 750cc riders and Iourty-seven 360cc riders along with a crowd of 5000 spectators jamming the Surrey Fairgrounds the First Annual Championship Half Mile Flat Track was the biggest motorcycle event held in British Columbia. The large crowd strained the facilities at the fairgrounds and next year some expansion will be necessary. As this event is the first held on this track and our crew not being used to handling a limestone surface the racing lagged a little at times in an attempt at keeping the dust and surface under control. Eventually the rutted surface injured two riders, one with a broken nose and concussion and J ohn Marinacci of Seattle with a badly lacerated face and broken shoulder. The 75 Occ ride rs were the ones the cro w d had co me to see and they weren't disappo in te d as 60 rid ers ba t tl ed it o ut o n t he ru tted track, With riders coming thro ugh t he co m ers th ree abreast and spraying 30 foot rooster tails of dirt. the crowd was kept on their feet with the exci te me nt that the big mo tors generate. Wit h a loose surface and 80 horsepower on tap it makes fo r some wi ld sliding action in the comers. Pat Marinacci of Seattle took ' t he 750cc conciliation races with a flag to flag ride and Jim Hurschback of Salem, Oregon too k the 750 Trophy Dash in a fine ride. With six national number riders sitting on the line for the 15 lap Main event anything could happen . Randy Skiver (H-D) of Everett jumped into an early lead with Mike Elder (Tri) running on top of Skiver's back wheel for second. Running at 120 MPH is very tiring and at the checkered flag Skiver faded to a third with Mike E lder taking first and Mark Williams second. Kim Maier of Ca lgary, Canada's on ly motorcycle jumper, managed to make his two jumps, even though he was suffering a few injuries after missing a 13 car jump in Eugene. Oregon. With his ramps spread out for his first jump of 12 cars, Kim cleared easily, jarring his injured back again. The ramps were pushed out and away he went again except as his front wheel touched the take off ramp it broke right through. Kim . managed to keep control of his mo torcycle al though it threw him off How'bout that, Mike Elder, t he pretty thing has one bonle to wash you r in nard s, and another to wash your number plate. MX leg guards were a w ise precautio n - limest o ne hurts. his line and he touched down only five inches from the edge of his lan ding ramp. • Resu lts in the Results Section.
