The large crowd was t reated to som e fast a n d close ridi ng an d as a res ult there were quite a few specta cular crashes. With all that acti on it was go od to see t hat there wer e no seri o us injuries. In the 100 Novice race, David Mastalba opened up a good lead at th e star t and held it until the checker follow ed by Paul Hanso n and Vern Craw ford. In the 2 00 Novi ce bash , Tony Kin g took the lead from th e st art on his rigid fra med Triumph and h eld off Fran k Cafferata and Sh aron McCail, both on Bultacos. The race for the brass in th e 250 Novi ce main cha racterized the close racing that typified th e night as Kris Greillman moved into the lead and held it until th e flag. Behind him , it was anybody's ra ce as the rest of th e pack fought it out until the end with Dan Lep ach at tak ing the second spot. After a restart with two rid er s going down, Ed Crouse took th e 36 0 Novice win in con vinci n g styl e. In the 200 Am ateur j'Exper t fina l, no one gave an inc h. Lee Rob erts to o k th e lead in both starts o nly to ha ve his bike blow t he lower end on the th ird lap. T his put Bill Lambert in to th e lead and he wasn ' t about to le t anybody have it. Steve Dietz, from Ch ico . p ick ed up th e nex t sp o t. T he 250 Expert event w as so closely fo ught th at on ly three riders finish ed . Everyone was ridi ng close an d hard. White p lat e number 16, Greg Furgeso n and Montie Martin duel ed for three laps side by sid e, Martin lost it wh en he ran ove r Furg eson's fo ot an d then Furgeson himsel f wen t out w he n his m ach ine faile d . John Munson cla imed a fine wi n on hi s Yamaha. Manuel Crummet p osted a fir st in th e 360 Expert race . Ju st back fro m the short track races at Daytona, he led the main from start to fin ish after sha king off Jerry Koffler who too k th e seco nd • spot. ORE., MA RCH 24 Te rritorial Racing Asso cia tion held their last MX fo r t he season . in the 100 class the big surprise w as Greg Proden (Yam) jumping from a Minibike class and taking t he o ve rall w in a way from Rand y B inder ( Y a m ) a n d Rustin G ore (Yam). Gary Davis (Ha n) had the riding ability to ma t ch the spe ed of Steve Williams (Bul) in th e 125 Expert class b ut he had to settle for second. An in tere sti ng new comer in the 200 class w as Lennie Riedinger (Ya m). In the first mota Ch et Cam pbe ll { Pen] wen t into an early lead fo r three lap s the n bi t the dust. .R ied inge r m oved into first with Gary Leavitt (Pen) second an d Campbell co mi ng bac k for a thi rd. In the second run Ried inger got a good start and held it the rest of t he race. Leavitt came in for second w it h Pat Kris Grellman serves up some Spanish action at second Reno Indoor. I Healey (Puc h) th ird . Campbell cut th e . ti res and had to go back bu t ca me up wi th a fo ur th p lace. T hi rd mota , Campbell was 'in the lead al l th e way with Ried inger breath ing down his neck. Overall firs t wen t to Riedinger wi t h Campbe ll secon d and Leavitt th ird. The action wa s fast in the 25 0 Expert class. Steve Williams (Man) and Ron Jensen (H on ) set a grueling pace in mota one. Williams held J ensen o ff until th e last lap going in to the woods where J ensen took over. After they came over the jump Jensen hit th e ground. Williams came in for the win. While this was goi ng on, Tim Holbrook (Ha n ) and Brad Hurst (Su z) were side by side on th e wh it e flag going fo r th e sec o nd pl ace win . Hurst got by and Holbrook had to settle for third. In the second mota the starter really had a tough time getting th ese guys off the lin e. There were restarts. Williams took the lead position with Holbrook and Hurst clashing again . This time Holbrook won. Hurst took third. Third m ota, Williams took the lead and held it all the way. Hurst and J en sen change d pla ces, w ith Hur st in second then los ing it to Jensen on the wh i t e fl ag. Hur st succeede d in over taking J ensen fo r second on t he last lap. Overall firs t went to Williams with Hurs t second and Holbrook third. Op en Expert first mota was Lester Hu ey (Suz) in the lead w ith Charles Standeford (BSA) andJack Heeter (CZ) close beh ind. Hee ter took the lead from Hu ey o n th e th ird lap and a few seconds late r Dave Weleber (Hus) go t by Sta ndefo rd for thi rd . Sec o nd go, Heeter was in the lead wi th H uey o n his fender . Mike Bailey (Yam) was in t hi rd. Hee ter was fo rced t o re tire fo r th e m oto when he too k a bad spill and broke his handlebars. This put Hu ey ·in the lead with Bailey close b eh ind. Standeford was th ird. Third time around Huey tried everything in his pow er to beat Bailey but go ing into the woods Bailey st re aked by and held the lead for the mota. I Yuba-Sutter MX By Harry Pelliccione MARYSVILLE , CAL ., MARCH 24 Sunday m ight have been a gl oo my. day for normal people but for the motocrossers who went to Marysville, it was great. This was the Yuba-Sutter Motorcycle Club 's first m otocross of the new year and t hey had a good turnout co n s id e r in g there were other races in the valley. The track wa s in good co ndi ti on for th e race. There were mudholes and plen ty of whoop-d e-doos. Part of the tra ck go t a little d usty tow ards the end of the da y but they promised to hav e a wa ter truck fo r th e ne xt race, By far th e best race of th e day was th e 125 Ex perts. Eddie Brown, Kevin Henry and Danny Ol sen fough t, b attled and swi tched place s thro ug ho ut the entire race. Bro wn finally co pped top honors wi th two hard fo ught win s. Olsen had a sec o nd and. a third fo r second overall with Hen ry in th ird with two fourth pl ace fin ishes. In the 125 Am ateur first mota , Gary Morris and Dan McConn~1 switched pla ces at least four times during th e fifteen minutes. Morris finally edg ed ahead to take the win in both races to give him an undisputed overall victory. McConnel had a second and a fourth to get th e second place slot. Jeff Shurt z was third place with two thirds in the race . Rick Sutton (Mai) wa s fast and smooth in the Open Amateur cla ss. He led the first mota with a co m for table lead. In the second mota he h ad the lead up until he did one of the most spe ctacul ar get-offs I have ever seen . Bike and rid er seemed to fly before hitting th e ground. Jon Ivins who pursued Sutton in th e race was the vic to r with a seco nd and a first. Maur ice Sanc hez placed second with a fo ur th and a seco nd wh il e J im Gulbrandsen fo llowe d in t hird o verall.
