McGill Cycle Park, surrounded by mist cove red green hills, was a beautiful place to hold a race on a beautiful day. ]I Most of the time whoever won ·wa s the rider who got aut in front -first . An exception who caught my eye ~ was Kevin Henry on a Bultaco in the , 125 Expert class. In the first moto he " started in last place becasue of a bad start. But with co nsistan t skill and his 'n ose steady on his line, Kevin worked up to finish in seventh. In the second moto Kevin led the whole race until the last half lap . Kevin Henry met his Waterloo when Mark Schroeder, who was right behind him all the way, wormed by him only a milimeter ahead the rest of the way. Another impressive rider was John Minor. He really hawled and smoked his con tenders with two firsts. .O n the whole the race was an eye opener, even for my virgin motocross · exp erience. It was the first time I ever saw anyone cross up before my very 11 o o c UJ c CORDOVA", CAL., MAR. 17 In Sout hern Califo rnia. when it rains th ey cance l races. In Northern Califor nia. when it rains. th ey race. Here Arnold Bailey (Suz) and Ronal d Yorukawa (Hon) dice it out - mudoeross sty le. own eyes. The only thing that got me mad were the spectators who crossed the track without thought and forced the riders to alter their lines (the riders got mad, too.) Despite rude spectators there were no serious accidents. • -, Results 100 Nov: 1. Roger Boyer (Vam). 2. Mike Siezlore (Hon); 3. Casey Brooks (Hon). 125 Nov D iv I: 1. Mark Womble (SUZ). 2. C h ar lie Marshall (Bul). B.O.S.S. MX at Argyll By K insella & Doody DIXON, CAL ., MAR. 30 The rain had sloshed down all day Friday; the track was at best a landing zone for ducks. A cold , damp wind zipped through the pits. But 170 hard c o r e motocrosserswere read y to do the be s t they could this slimy Saturday morning. After the first set of motos the higher parts of the .:- 0.. -e BANG TEN MOTOCROSS SOCKS REGULAR $2.98 rl 1 course were coated with a slick, snotty film of mud and the lower parts were long pits of knee deep, viscous, sucking, gluey muck wh ich pulled the riders down and made the races most unpredictable. Mark Ke ckely took th e lead off the line on his Honda in the 250 Beginners class, kept upright all the way around the track until he leap ed the small j um p and began to wallow in th e m ire of the low ly ing " 5" tum where he w obbled and finall y fell in the middle of a large puddle. He got up and o n and started and fell again three times until he finall y said the hell with it. By this time he had lo ts of company floundering in the mud ar ound him but Arn o ld Baily (Suz) and Ken Shoreen (Pen) had cre p t through and were in the lead to take top honors. T h at "5" section was like a trials and very few riders of any cla ss clean ed it. A t the end of the day everyone was hoping for clear skys for Sunday and ask ing th e location of the nearest do- it -yourself car wash. Sunday morning cam e on bright and clear, th e ground dried out very well, and more riders showed up: among th em a guy named Doug Raines who rode a Yamaha YZ in the 250 Expert field. Raines took a distinct and penn anent lead from the start for warm up and then began to lap . all . the comp e t it ion . He went aro und everyone else so many times that only the scorekeepers knew the final co un t. He rides like a cheetah runs - it all looks so damned natural. The 125 Novi ces led by Ron Carroll (Hon), Jeff Sibley (Yam) and Phil Crane (Ho n) put on a good race. These 125 riders alw ays seem to be ahout seventeen , mean and absolutely fearless. They come around that tr ack like a swarm of bees ·ch as ing th at big bear, vict ory . After the race the w inners received their trophies from Fred Dion, the promotor, and everyone who raced both days took home a participation trophy - which they certainly deserved. Riders seemed to be satisfied that they had spent a worthwhile weekend at Argyll and that B.O.S.S. had organized a pretty good motocross.
