Chet Davis (Pen) an d John Brown (Han) each had a win and a second as th ey started the final 125 Expert moto. The Penton must have c ho ked on a puddle - it just gasped and wheezed. Brown to ok the win and top money as Davis limped in fo u rth in t he last ra ce for second. Chuck Hagen (Hus) led all the 250 Junio rs a nd m ost o f th e Intermediates for first 25 0 Junior. Hagen spent most o f th e d ay di cing with Rod Kentner (Yam ), the Intermediate winner. Merl e Fell ow (Yam) had lots of problems on his way to second Open Junior. He was leading the first mota when he slid out on the ice and again in the t hird mota when he fell in the mud. He won the second moto. If you didn't make it in time for practice the first moto action must have been a little difficult. The race started with the r a in c o min g down. What's new? Through the first motos and halfway through the second the minibikes waded in th e mud while the big bikes sen t it flying. T hen the sun came out. Track conditions improved along with the riders attitudes. Box Stock and Modified Minib ikes ran together because of th e small tum o ut of riders. Mar k Moria rty (Han) Box Stock flat blew off ma ny of the m o d ified riders to take a first overall in his class. Mark Worthington (Yam) took seco nd. > In th e 100 cc class Ra ndy Binde r (Yam) and Rusti n Gore (Yam) had a race all t heir own. In all three motes it was the sa me story. Bin der giving Rustin Gore trouble all day. Binder won first overall with Gore taking se cond in the las t two mot os by in ches. In the 12 5 Expert class Dean Rhodes (Han) to ok a fast lead in th e fir st m ota . David Anderson (Ha n ) was second u ntil Steve Williams (Bul) pressing close behind pas sed o n the checkered flag . The second m ota fo und Rhodes in th e lead again with Williams gaining o n h im go ing into the woods. When they came out Williams was in t he lead. T he fin ish was very close but Willia m s hel d Rh odes off. In t he third mota Willia ms had a good lead all the way to take a firs t overalL Rhodes go t seco nd with a t hird going to Anderson. Attention nex t turned to the 200 class. There were seventeen bikes in this class, the m o st ever. Chet Campbell (Pen) won all three motos. Lu ck was with Chet in the third mota. Pat Healey (Puc h) w as pushing rig ht alo ng behind him in the first two m oto s but in the third m o t a Campbell fe ll, and Healey took over b y q ui te a lead. With Campbell taking up the ch ase he got by several riders and was working h is way up to the front when Healey pulled off th e track. Those flagman m ust have had that look in their eyes. There were no flag s out. Healey got back in the race again in time to take the lead by a short distance went around the track once and pulled off again ???? Trials By Joe Bogums PATrE RSO N, CAL.,JAN. 13 Clear skies, crisp fresh air, an d moist gro und was the setting for the first round of the California Sta te Trials Championship. T his trial, organized by PJ.T.S.' Derek Belvoir, went off without any of the usual hassles. Entries, ridin g numbers, and instructions all went out by mail . d ispensing wi t h th e riders' m ee tin g the day of the trial. This system worked b eautifully. Section one started on an off-camber hill and d ro p ped into a gully fil ledwit h loose rocks a nd la rge r boulde rs. Section two and three were continuous traps about 150 yards lon g, again w it h small loose ro cks mi xed with la rge r boulders while you wound up a narro w can yo n that provided n at ural bo undaries. Sections fo ur and five we re b o th mud sections. a nd the h an g u p he re was having proper th rottle con tro l. Sections six and sev en were lo c ated in a stee p can yon where the ground was fairly dry , so th e riders had to swi t ch fro m the ridin g sty le o f th e p re vious mud se ctions to dry ridin g techniques. Section seven proved to be th e m os t difficult trap of the d ay, with onl y three Experts cle anin g it.
