Pioneer Ground Winte r Scrambles By Bill Spencer OAKDALE , CAL.• JAN. 27 Ma Nature finall y relen ted in her winter ways and allowed District 36 Scrambles riders t o get o u t and do their thing for th e first time this year. Th e turnout was good and the track ex cellent despite the soft ground. With the ground fog burned off, the day was a brilliant success. Despite much I discussion amongst riders an d clubs co ncernin g the lack of AMA medical insurance, everyone still had th e righ t licenses and the races were run with no bad accidents. The nearly 200 riders hardly noticed th at the pr o blems the district is h avin g in this area doesn't affect th eir ab ility to run good even ts. Danny Mills and Mike Bowling put on the best competition o f the day in the 125 Junior class. In the heat, Mills took the lea d early and held off the Ray Hood-Noguchi Yamaha of Bowling for most of the event typifying the battle that may we ll make these two the next set of ho t shoes to come out of this area. In the Main, Bowling wasted no ti me i n ta king the advantage with a tre mendous shot off the second corner. With all his enthusiasm, though" he missed the jump tum on one lap and was greeted with the black nag as well as the checkered at the end. Result wa s that he didn 't get anything as Mills won with Daryl MacDannald ge ttin g the second sp o t, Rod Greener suffered the same problem with a c u t through the co urse just short of th e jump. Much arguing went on ab out his being forced to cu t but to no avail. Super off-ro ad ra c er Neil MacDannald was disallowed a double win today when hi s VR Montesa failed to make it aro un d th e necessary laps, despite a decided advan tag e. He did win the Op en Expert rid ing a borro we d Maico the he re ally likes. Just wh at Maico needs, anoth er win ner. In th e 25 0 Exp ert Main, t he firs t tum clai med fo ur bik es an d starter J .R. T ra m mell wisely red nagged the event whil e bodies wer e untangled. Nobody was hurt altho ugh Crai g Scr o ggin s was fav ori ng a so re hand. With all riders back a t the lin e, the restar t went to the old man , Ray Huff . and h e quickly moved o ut to await the MacDannaid cha rge . It ca me but o nly lasted a short distance. Hu ff th en built a treme ndous lea d o nly to lo se it all t o Sc roggins who really ha d his adren aJin flowing. H uff and his breath in g problem came out abo ut six laps into t he eig ht lapper so by the checke red. Scroggins and the Cooper motorcycle were the winners. Stan S late won the 175 ·200 Novice Combined despite taking the checkered second . R ich Park , the guy that got the checkered firs t had some pro blem in the heat and faile d to take the checkered fo r an o fficial finish. Despite win nin g the Main, he w ithdrew wh en it wa s questioned , a sp o rting gesture fo r sure. This gave Wes St o u t a se co nd place but Mr. NorCal Versatile Ron Self appea red on a 250 Penton to ta ke third in the 250 class and win Open Expe rt . Mark Pete n (18) was third overall. he was already o n his way home when the brass was handed out. The problem for two of the minibike races t oday was in t he in terpretation of 0-36 minibike rules. One focused on the Steve Lucero monocoque frame, and the other was on Brian Thompson 's Open class ( l OOcc) Yamaha's wheel sizes. Both protests will be heard at the Competition Committee meeting o n February 18. The outcome may well spe ll some ch an ges in the new rule book. Results MINI A : 1. Tom Breault (Yam) . 2. Nor-Cal MX By Ste ve Castillo Phot os by AI Manly LIVERMORE , CA L. , JAN. 27 Beautiful blue skys greeted all wh o showe d up for Nor-Cal' s Motocro ss today. T-sh irts were the order through o ut most of the day for a large turnout o f both riders and spectators on hand for a fine day of ra cing. St arting it all off with the 125 Expert s was Dan Turner ridin g a Husky rather than h is usual Pen t o n. Turner b attled mo st of the d ay wi th Pen t on Wes t 's Carl Cranke. Dan and Carl went a t it hot an d heavy lapping riders with in just a fe w la ps of the start, Dan was r able to ge t th e win and pi ck up fi st place mo ney in that class. Cranke t ook Danny Mills, 9v middle, took the 125 Junior win after Mike Bowling got off course. sec o nd and Pete Scar lett put in a good ride ne tting him t hird o ver all. Buck Murphy (Pen) had complete control o f the 250 Expert class. Althou gh Dan T urn er came up to challen ge and lead several ti mes du rin g the moto , Murphy had everything his own way as he pi cked up the win with T urner, riding th e tri ckiest Husky this sid e of Sweden, in second. Usual pilot Ron Self got th ird on his new Penton. Ron Self wasn't h appy with his third place in the 250 class so he got it on and p icked up the w in and firs t place cas h in the Open class. J ohn Franklin, longtime Maico man and serie s rider, came to Altamon t to give the new track a try. He liked it fairly well as he blitzed ar ound the track in tru e style, but bad mechanicals held him back to second pl ace. Mark Pet ers rode Willi Bauer 's Maico Special t o th ird in that class. Jeff Leever (Mai) picked up the win in the 250 Intermediate class. Jeff riding his new Mai co took second in the first race against Curt Berggren's streaking Yamaha YZ . In t he second race Curt unloaded on the firs t lap trying to m ake up for a poor start . J eff h ad the rest of the race t o him sel f as he rode to first overall. Berggren took second and Ch arles Holcomb ri d ing a Husk y for Moore and Sons in Sa n ta Cruz rode to a well earn ed thi rd o verall. In the Op en Intermed ia te it was Sco tt A ustin (Mail and Mik e Phillip s (Mai) d oing th e ca t and mouse rou tin e. Scott got Mike one t oo many times and pi ck ed u p hi s cas h. Phill ip s took second p lace with Ed Elmringer t aking third. Nor-Ca l is now p aying cash to In termedia tes an d the riders reall y d ig it. There isn't m uch room a t h ome for the brass 'man tle-p ieces, b u t there always seems to be room fo r a few extr a dollars. I • Results 100 J r : 1 . D on Can talou p i (Ya m): 2.
