The machines were one-offs, set up fo r shop riders Billy Urban and John Sorensen. Serial numbers are CR125M·l011554 and CR 125M·l0034995 . MONTESA 'S PREFERENCE FOR FAST FINNS CONFIRMED. Montesa Motors recently a nnounced that they have signed Finnish-born U.S. citizen Peter Lamppu to ride for them officially in the United States in 1974. It is actually a return to Montesa for Peter, who campaigned the resurgent Spanish make on New England "scrambles" tracks when he first came to this country. He stayed wit h Mon tesa u ntil offered a more lucrative contract and, with the effective dissolution of Tea m Kawasaki, it lo oks like Montesa 's offe r was lucrative enough once again. In addition to making racing economically feasible for more people, it would hopefully pressure the manufacturers to incl ud e a decent suspension system on the stock bike. We'd also like to see a stock production road racing class. Have you noticed how the cover dates on publications are always well ahead of when they actually appear? Us too. In fact, we understand that an upcoming issue of Dirt Rider has a cover date of 1984. NorCaI Mo tocr oss is trying to d o something to make moto cross cheap. Perhaps somebody's pulling the feathers over our eyes. American Honda is reportedly contacting more enduro riders to mount them on the MT-250 two-stroke for this year. Names such a s Steve Bell, Carl Price and Dick Knapp have been ment ioned in connection with semi-official sponsorship by Honda. The bikes will have Elsinore barrels, heads, shocks, etc. at the rider's option. Knapp is likely to stay with his Husqvarna ri de, however. Not all 1974 Bultaco Pursangs are blue. The 360 is red, with yellow stripes. It has 352cc and, shall we say, adequate torque and power. Papa doesn't get to keep one for more than five laps until the 9o-day lead time slicks play with it a while. It may just be worth waiting for. T hu mbing through so me 197 1 D-37 motocross standings lately (prior to carefully storing the m in the Wealey file), we noticed th at th e top ran ked Novice m o to cr o sser in t hat year, earning No. 16 , was Janen e Pennington, now J ane ne T urton. Parker Dam 400 February 8·10 will give the bikers a good shot at an overall win since the bikes won't need to have lighting equipment to run. There are $25,000 in pr izes and contingencies. Go get some. Call 213/437-0466. And, the bikes will run first. Doggie -biking seems to be all the coming thing. Everywhere we go, we see people riding with their dogs on the seat, tank, or handlebars. Big dogs, little dogs, and ugly girls of all sizes are going along as passengers. We've also seen dogs at trials (see page 18), motocrosses, and on the street. On e dude was struggling with his Husky (the furry kin d) as he rode his BMW d own the boulevard. Also bantered ab 0 u t are the names Carruthers, Romero, Roberts (a good ligh tweigh t pick), and Baumann. If you don't like Yamahas you are only allowed one other choice if you listen to our staffers: Yvon DuHame1. That ma n's will-power makes a lot of horsepower.
