This Will Scare You The Albuquerque folks protesting an injunction forbidding motorcycle use on their own private p roperty are facing the very same problem we once . faced here in California. Fremont, California - some people once called it Odorn-ville - has an ordinace which states: "Any motorcycle or motor-driven cycle, as defined by the California Vehicle Code, - may NOT be operated on any private property unl ess for the express purpose of access for parking or garage - or for exit to a Public Highway." This, of course, applies to personally owned property, regardless of location or d imensions within Fremon t. It also obviously applies to stree t o r d ir t machin es -::: b ut does not app ly t o Go -C art s, dune-buggies or h or ses! (1 have teste d th at m eaning). It 'W'as a very good year 1973 saw Penton Cycles have their finest year ever a nd stars popped up everywhe re!! The n ew year air in '73 seemed to be ch arged with cycle compe titio n hitting an all time h igh and en thusi asm ru nn in g rampant all over th e country. The cycle even ts being held would hit an all time h igh . .. maybe the highest ever and in the future ... . the pump had been primed. This year the biggest win for Penton .... well there were so many big wins that to pick out one would be really unfair .. . One thing for sure though the West Coast set the pace for Penton wi th a lot of lst time really big wins. Rick Munyon winning the first West Coast National Enduro for Penton, the M-X stars lik e Ray Lopez, Chuck Bower and Mark Harrington, and Tim Lunde, the U.S. Trophy Team riders sweeping the west coast qualifiers. Carl Cranke's outstanding Hopetown victories and our emergence on the desert with Bill Friant and young Geoff Singer and Ron Hendrichson in Cross Country. In the East Penton riders sw ept up most of the gold at the National Enduros and 2 day qualifiers .. . . Jack Penton's fantastic trials rides to the #1 spot. Jim Hollander takin g his 1 2 5 c c Pent on pas t all the Independent riders in th e qu a lifiers and emerging a s on e of the best trails riders in th e country. John Stanley's big National Enduro win. Even overseas the air wa s charged. History was made when Penton/KTM signed the Russian MX Team and we saw th e emerge n ce of a new M-X threat when they powered the Penton/KTM to victory at th e 250 Yugoslav G.P. and several 2nds getting the new cycles ironed out. The Italian Penton/KTM's set a fast pace in Italy winning that country's ISDT Trophy Team berth and the em ergence of Penton/KTM in Europe as the newest and most promising newcomer in the field. Let 's review the year . . . . It started with a bang at th e l st National Enduro of the year when J ack Penton pulled overall . . . . The next Nati on al proved no fluk e for Jack when he took 2n d overa ll. Then the West's 1st Na tional Enduro saw 16·yea r-old Rick Munyon take the . . . ._ lRr ~ The Moto-Cross scene exploded for P enton in '73. The lOOcc Pentonwas d amn near unb eatable and rid ers like Ted Hargett, Bob Crosier, Jimmy Merch, Robbie Burgess and J on Leak powered it to hundreds of victories. The 125cc class proved the Penton could move with the best. Ray Lopez shocked everybody by winning the 1st 125cc National M-X Championship and 4 other Penton stars were right behind him. West Coast Penton 125cc riders Chuck Bowers, Bruce McDougal, Danny LaPorte, Ed Cole, Bill Payne, Tim Lunde and many others dominated the 125cc class. In the East James Manly, Rod Busch, Rick Walsworth, Doug Kane, Steve Ellis and many other 125 M-X stars won mo re than their share. At the 125cc World Cup Mark Harrington took his P ento n to 4th. In the 175cc class we were unchallenged. Gary Crowe, Joe Fidal and Sportman M-Xers allover the country ea sily beat the opposition. In Cros s Country, Hare Scrambles and G.P. we also took our share of the wins. Geoff Singer and Jon Hewi tt took a Penton 100cc to the ove r a ll i n the Mini-Mint. Carl Cranke at Hopetown in the 100cc and 250cc C lass . Carl 's win at Hungry Creek , Dan T urner at Wels eyv ille, Alton Mead ows at Franklin 75 and Hare Scramble star like Gary Younkins kept the Pentons always at the top. These were some of the highlights of '73. We a t Penton love the big wins but we a re proudest of the wins you, the rid ers, get at your local tra cks, enduros and hare scrambles. Our phil osophy has always been t o mak e the fin est pr oduction sportcycle possible. We do not sponsor rid ers wi th special machines or sign rid ers to contracts. J ack was then 2nd in n ational standings behind last yea r' s winner Bill Kain. Then Jack hit a gain at the 125 mile Black Coal. It looked like nothing could keep J ack fr om winning the national titl e. With 4 runs left he only needed 2 good hits, but he never did. Instead his brother, Tom took over with 2 Nationals in a row- the Cotton Boll and Kaw Valley. The last national title was his if he won this event. Well, he won it for about 30 minutes. He was declared the winner , but protests of one check were made, the check was thrown out and Jack lost the National E nduro Championship by 10 seconds. But what a year, 7 Nationals Overall and we took about 5 places in the top 10 National Standings. The Trials scene this year was also one of our best ever as we totally dominated. It was made extra important this year as the ISDT was going to be held in the U.S. for the 1st time. Six 2-Day Qualifier s were held through out the country. In the 6 even ts we won 4 overall and 2nd overal l in one. We captured more gold med als th an al l other machines a nd Jack Penton took the top spot a nd B i ll U h l and Jeff Penton were 2n d and 3rd. The Penton riders wh o se t the trials pace were Jack Penton, Bill UbI, Carl Cranke, Jeff Penton, Tom Penton, Dane Leim bach, Doug Wilford, Jim Hollander, Paul Danik, Joe Barker, Rick Jenkins, Ben Brown, Barry Torgerson, Dave Duarte, Bill Friant, Cosby Chestnut and Karol DeCraw. The highlight of the trials series wa s the ISDT where we were the U.S. Trophy Team. We finished all the cycles and took 5th in the World Trophy. Unforseen problems kept us do wn when Je ff ran into a problem and dropped marks. But Pentons won 20 gold medals (mo re than any machine in the ISDT). Bill Uhl, Carl Cranke and Jack Penton were the top U.S. riders. Joe Barker, Paul Danik and Doug Wilford also captured gold medals on their Penton s. By far Penton riders and machinery out classed everybody else. """",..., ",,""... ID:!"l'F............., rn». V""UI,I et..... , Wn wll,"" ' .
