This past weekend we took a rid e up to "THE ROCK STORE." On the way up w e ran into Cook Neilson of Cy cle m aga zin e. "It's gon e absolu tely berserk ,'! he sa id. It was true. When we turned on to Mulholland Highway, it became apparent that something was afoot, In every other tum there was an on coming rider o n y our sid e of th e ro ad with open exhausts and ey es as big as headlights. Police were everywhere and with reason. One full -h ouse GP bike turned up and took a tum down the road. There were a couple of thoroughly scraped-up motorcycles, and the proprietor of t he store allowed as how a couple of ca fe ra cers scratch paveme nt the hard way every weekend. On the w ay h om e w e came ac ross a brand new Kawasaki S-3. It was a write-off and the rid er had been taken aw ay in an arnbu- . lance. Cafe racing isn't as much fun as road racing, and it isn't as safe, either. We hope that so me of those guys will turn up at OCIR th is weekend (Feb. 3) fo r the CMC cafe-racer class for first -timers. Honda has sent letters to all their dealers stating that the Elsinores are still in production. T he AMA in response to a req uest from the Federal Energy Offices has proposed a 25 percent cu t-b ac k in energy (fuel) c o n s u m p t i o n through motorcycle racing.
