Why poke fun at the double standards in our society while exhibiting a large portion of it ourselves in the process? I won't come across with some kind of starry-eyed ide alism about the morays and virtues of remaining naive in a hassle prone world . So let's get our shi t together instead of throwing it into th e fan and getting it all ov er everybody else. A letter from the more inte.lligent life-forms on th is earth It seem s that in recen t mon ths, Cycle News (?) has taken a strong political flavor (sm ell?) . If political sniping is to be your forte, why don't y o u renam e yo ur paper: Poli tical News or Cynical Views. Ac tua lly, p laying political genius wouldn't b e so b ad if the ed it o rials were wr i t t e n by knowledgeable and responsible observers. However, printing articles such as Ronny Schneiders recent attack on the energy problem ( 18 Dec. 1973, " Gam b it") is absolutely amazing . For any one person to be so ignorant and/or stupid is utterly inc red ib le. I me an, Schneiders has more h oles in his art icle than his h ead ; and that's not easy . When you print an ar ticle with so many false hoods and inconsistencies, it co nfirms m y op in io n that your staff has no th in g cons truc tive to say about the curren t state of our sport. It is easy to pick scapegoats (such as the oi l co mpanies, the m ilitary , Nixon, et al.] but it is difficu lt to See the actual p roble ms and propose r e alisti c solutions. But, then, I su p p ose that would be too much to ask of b itter, politically hysterical writers. Or is it a matter of not wanting to see reality? T he answers to man y facets of the energy problem arc already avail ab le for those who have taken the time to figure out what the real problems ar c. Unfortunately (to paraphrase) : "There is non e so b lind as he who w ill no t see reality because he has a p olitical hangup " . Now , yo u 'll probably have a real intell igent answer w ith one o f your snappy com eb ac ks that com ple tely avoids the whole po int. But go ahead , because every time you d o , it just reassures me and thousands of others that we have nothing to worry ab out.
