With a ll the rea lly gre at features of th is challengi ng rac e faci lity, it is on ly too bad th at it doesn ' t have a starting gate to keep every b ody honest (I ' ll explain why, later ). Mssrs. Patten and Shey lo ok ed o u t u pon all th ose wh o ca me to race and determined tha t there weren't eno ugh to fill up all the c lasses: So at th e rid er s m ee ting prior to th e race, it was announced th at classes for the day wou ld be co nsolida te d into 250-0pen ; all 12 5s- 175s; an d all min is, 100s and Powder Puffs. T he 250-0 pen class started t he day an d th e first mota wen t to Joe Coll ins (Suz), with E.J . Norris (CZ) and St eve Kirkland (CZ) fillin g the top th ree spots. First 125 m o t o was ' wo n by Ch uck Wheel er (Suz) wi th Dou g McGowen (Suz) and Paul Ivie (YZ) hot o n his tail. The first mini-IOO-PI' m o to provide d so me fine racing for the day with lon e Powder Pu ffers Maryl yn McG ow en (Suz) berserking it o ff th e lin e and in to a co m man d ing lead. T om Taliani (Ya m) didn 't ca re for t his burst o f women 's lib and even tu all y took over the lead half way t h ro ugh the m oto , In th e e nd it was Talia n i getting the top spot with McG ow en (Suz] second, and J oe Spa ngle r (Ho n) th ird . Due to the lack of a starti ng ga te and relying o n the o ld kid -wit h -his handi n- Lh e-air t ec hi n q ue, th e second 250-0pen moto had some diffic ulty getting off the line with man y fa lse sta rts and several gu ys who had the nerve to start their b ikes in fro n t of the lin e : ther e's got to be a better way ! On ce everybody got serious enough to start p roperly, things got underway. EJ. Norris (CZ) won the second 250-0pen rnoto, and John Ward (Hon ) and Ke ith Patten (Yam) got se cond and third respectively. The second 125 moto got only as far as one or two laps until it was black flagged when Chuck Wheeler (Suz) was cen te r punched by an other rider, m akin g him crash. The ambulance went out to pick him up , an d it was determined that Chuck had on ly hurt his an kle and didn't break any thing. Th e moto restarte d and Neil Christman (Pen) got th e top spot whe n it was all over. Paul Ivie (YZ) took seco nd th is time, an d Doug McGo wen (Suz) t oo k th ird . T he bat tle o f th e sexes came back agai n wi th the second mini-I OO-PP m oto as T om Taliani and Maryl y n McG owen again battled it o ut fo r th e lead . T om finall y built up a very big lead over Mar ylyn and go t t he win with Marylyn having to settle for sec on d again. Oh yea h, J De Spangler go t th ird, agai n . John Ward (Ho n) who had been lurking around in th e first 25 0-0 pen moto, th en second in th e seco nd one, finally cop pe d th e top spo t in the final mo to with Steve Ball (Hon) and E.J . Norris (CZ) ge t ting the other tw o spots. Neil Christman (Pen) w on th e las t 125 moto again , with Doug McGowen (Suz ) and Paul Ivie (YZ) th e sec o nd an d . th ird places. Maryly n McG owen fin ally wo n it in the last mini -IOO-PP moto, wi th J oe Sp an gler takin g sec o nd behind her and • Bart Hitt (Suz) go in g for th ird. and came o ut th e winner on a Hemi-tuned Honda for Whittier Honda. The engin e was puttin ' out ponies th at the other 12 5 h otdogs c ould only dream ab o u t. John Salinsky (Pen) came t o romp against - th e Superfun ra cers and wa s second to Gl ore in the firs t moto over Gordon Tamn on a YZ and the Honda of Neil Petrillo who just moved out of the Junior pack. The second moto gate dropped for the class and th is time Neil Petrillo wa s crankin' it on in the lead un til Glore rubbed h is chances for the moto win while Salinsky and Tamn were charging from behind. After seeing these guys in this mo to , one may predict that they will invade the lo cal 125 Expert classes in 1974. It looked like there was no chance of Glore's rapid engine pooping out like last week ' cause it was going strong, yet just after th e second moto I saw Bill pushin ' h is m achine with DeSoto luc k. T h e ga te dropped fo r th e fmal 125 In termediate rno to and it was a shove-push t ype race between Petrillo and Sali n sky b ut the H on da victored. T oad ing aro und in fourth ca me Glore wi th th e same effort but with a di ffe ren t b ike ' cause he was slu gging ar o un d on a Pen ton th a t he conned off some d ude. When the p o in ts were t otaled Bill Glor e h ad wo n the 12 5 Inte rmediate class over Neil Pe trill o and John Salin sk y. • Resu lts 2 50 E X ; 1. Fra nk F itzg er ald (Hus ) . 2 .
