Alas, they have lost t he ir b el oved sens e o f humor! I am qu iet ce rtain th e gentleman's attit ude w ould have b een mu ch less host ile had he got asked that immortal quest ion : " H ow many miles that thing get to a gallon?" Before leaving t he safe ty of one's own driveway , o ne must m ak e his m ind accept t he fact th at one m ust drive the scooter like any It alian mahcine was made to be drive n. O n such m achines. one must fight for every inc h o f tra ffic space - one must attack! High o n t he cam and wide open , always! Rid e"w it h aggression and ap prehe nsion and , above all , ride with no faith in mankind , an d have p aid -up hosp it alization insuran ce! At first sight , kid dies are thorough ly co nvin ced of two t hin gs. 1. Grownups do have more fun . 2. That I was' the advance man for some circus and they applauded from t he boxseats of station wagons while their parents either smiled knowingly but weakly , o r they sneered at my blatant display of obnoxious oneupsmanship! Some senior citizen drivers took a dim view of m y "toys for tots" movement on the city streets and more than once ph y sica lly ur ged me back upon th e sidewalks where they thought I ob vi o usly belonged . (No m atter. many felt the sa me when I rode an 850 Norton !) T he attitudes of the "Players" and "Highrollers" are the hardest by far to take. T hey spent their ti me next to m e at the stoplights all bent over t he helms, and/or rolling in the aisles of their Lincolns, Cadillacs, and Chryslers convulsed with laughter . T hey know full well that if t here is such a thing as a fuel shortage then Pet er Pan is a punk! To them , th e whole thing is a com m unist plot to j ack up the price of everything in the world. "Players" and " High rollers" don't scare eas y. They are not about t o be stam ped ed into d isposing of th eir hard earned and well deserved badges o f status and prestige merely on the b asis of same "Chicken Lickin' Falling Sky Theory." They will play the game the way they always have. . .until they run out of string. If the writer sounds a bit cynical it is o nly that r id ing a scooter is fun for a while , but after that its all downhill, and a p ain in t he b utt too - not just because this machine was old and borrowed. There is no excitement, for me, and that is a most ho p eless situation. There rem ain s one nagging realization . If one lives an d works in o r near the big cities, in the face of what lies in wa it for us , o ne can r id e the scooters and get approximately 80 mo re miles to t he gallon than , say, a Honda CB 125! Moreover , in the present mass move to antiquate America's "Better is Bigger" automobile syndrome. . .is it not conceivable that the time may co m e f aster than we car e to know that motorcycles a b ove 500 cc might be consider ed gas hogs?
