fI.I II IKI D. • ... ... IKI g g ~ r- 01 ,.....; l!) >$.0 :tl :l $.0 .0 lU t... Yahoo! Mountain goo! CMC Irwindale By John Bethea IRWINDALE , CAL.,JAN. 18 Round II of the three weeks of all-Amateur (trophies only) racing at Irwindale Raceway went off again tonight without a hitch except that nearly 200 riders signed in and a few got turned away when the gate worker ran out of entry forms. Even Miss Sue Fish took advantage of the three -motos-per -division situation. She's a weekly competitor here and has come very, very close in the past at beating all the boys in the 125 class with many seconds, thirds and fourths overall. Last week she got permission from CMC chief Stu Peters to try and put together a Powder Puff class fo r this week. Another family signe d in this week and there was , indeed, a PP class - numbering fou r. The Yamell household versus Sue. Anyth ing for a win, right, Sue? She m a d e it look easy with Dawn Yarnell co ming in second. No less tha n t hree d ivisio ns co m prised both th e 125 an d 250 Junio rs each. Sp litting u p the 125 awards were Robert Mari no (Hon) with two first in Division I , Mark Lawrence (Hon) also w ith two wins in Division II, an d Larry Bodell (Pen) whose 5-2-2 beat double winner Vince Van Hook (Yam) in Division III. The three 250 classes were pretty easy to call. Don Wood (Hon) used a 2-1-2 to top Division I, Dave Maxwell scored with a 1-3-1 on his CZ to win Division II, and Pat Hampton (Bul) tallied with a 1-1-2 to take Division III. T he 500 Juniors was also pretty well cut and dried once Karl Bash (Suz) got things under control. He took fourth in the first round and then suddenly found the WFO position and claimed the next two. Mark Heflin (Hus) scored second with three straight thirds. Bob Welch (Hon) was a single moto winner in 125 Intermediate action, but it was enough to whip non-mote-winner John MacG regor (Suz] at the trophy wi ndow. The 250 Inte rmediate showdown went to Morgan Malocco (Ya m) but it wasn't really a showdown as he scored 2-1-1. • Resu lts PO W D E R PUFF ; Sue Fish (HOd). 2. Dawn Varnell (Yam) . 3 . By Jack Collin MOORPARK, CAL.,JAN, 20 Couldn't find one AME member at Valley Cycle Park this Sunday that will ever again gripe about racin' during the long, hot, dry, summer months, That's because they all had to do it in the mud agam . About 100 members showed u p to do battle on Valley Par k 's new course. The majority of riders like the new clockwise layout, with the longer, to ugher uphill at t he so uthwest co mer, Naturally eveything that goes u p has gotta come down and this down hill side does it q uick. The rain m ad e it really slick and there we re a lo t of no-inj ury sp ills while guys learned how to take it . Powder Puffs an d Minis led thi ngs off, un der a layer of fog . Nancy Daggs (YZ) came back to the wi n ne r's circle , after a month off mending an injured foot. The third race had In termedia te and Seniors of 250 and 500 displacements \ racing together and the machine casualty rate for Intermediates was 100 percent. None could get back to the starting line for the second moto, Tom Claire (CZ) got 500 OA honors and Jeff Browning moved his -Mon tesa in first among the 250 group. Another Browning got overall hono rs in the 500 Junior division. Cal Browning (Mai) wrapped that one up amongst a busy bunch of combined 250 and 500 Juniors, Cal is Jeff's Dad. Looking back at old result columns would reveal a guy named Del Carroll and his Maico topping the Old-Timer listings regularly, Carroll was in on it again today as Old-Timers ra ced with 250 displacement Beginners. Carroll crossed the wire first in each mota to pull off overall honors again in this one, Floyd Widner got second on a Honda while Ron Landaker (Mai) took a third .
