Sears Point "Great Pumpkin Race" SEARS POINT, CAL., OCT. 28 The "Great Pumpkin Race" was a success despite the reluctance of riders to pick up their pumpkins at the end of the day. None were quite so reluctant to collect their trophies or gift certificates, however. The .first race of the day, Lightweight Production, was once again dominated by Dave Garoutte on a 250 OSSA. Jack Baker, on a 250 Ducati, took advantage of a crash on the fifth lap to slip into second place. Third overall and first 200 was once again Ed Vnini on his Honda. Credit must also go to Bill Lorber, last across the start/finish line on his 125 Suzuki, for actually coming up and claiming his pumpkin. The Lightweight GP race was led from start to f"mish by George Miller (Yam 125), who is making an end-of-the-season dash to save his number one plate. The 250 GP race was won by Ken Edmondson on a 250 Yamaha. Leading from start to finish, he was followed across the line by Eric Palcheimo (Yam) and Karl Cleeton (Kaw). Four riders never made it to the checkered flag. One rider, Tom Brigh t, had his crash in turn 11 caught on a videotape and had the dubious distinction of watching it played back after the race. Only one rider traveled up from Los Angeles, but he went home well stocked with trophies. In the 350 Production race Bob Crossman led {rom start to finish and in the next race came back for third place on a 350 Yamaha GP bike. In that race, Heavyweight GP, there was a torrid pace set by George Miller on his 350 water·pumper. Things weren't so easy as Pat Hennan, on a 750 Suzuki prepared by Ron Grant, led for three of the laps. The duel was decided when Pat dropped out with three laps to go. Fourth overall and inheriting fIrst place in the 750 class was Art Bernheisel on a Harley·Davidson. The Heavyweight Production race saw the best competition of the day. Ed Unini (Hon 750) took the lead for the fIrst four laps only to relinquish it to Jim Deehan (Nor 750) for the next five laps. However it was a ten lap race and Ed Vnini once again had the advantage at the flag. Three sidecars put on the fInal race of the day with the McNeal/Sky Kerely team coming in fIrst. So ended the "Great Pumpkin Race" with pumpkins left over because riders were too shy, or embarrassed, to come up and claim them. It will be interesting to see i{ this same shyness is exhibited toward the race queen at the A FM's Third Annual Homecoming Day Race on November 11th at Sears Point Raceway. • Fuel Bikes at NHRA Supernational Drags A field of eight fuel-burning drag bikes will be among the featured attractions at the 4th Annual Supernationals of drag racmg, slated for Ontario Motor Speedway November 16-18. The popular Pro-Bike category is being added to the $177 ,000 event for the third straight year and has drawn en tries from top riders who win be gunning for both a victory and the existing National record of 8.73 seconds at 174.75 MPH. That mark was set last Labor Day by Jim Preisler of Minneapolis who was among the initial entrants for the Supernationals. Preisler rides a twin Harley and is among the favorites at Ontario. As in the past, the fuel bike field of finalists will be determined by qualification runs which gets underway Friday, Tickets for the Supernationals including reserved seating, are on sale now at all Sears stores and other Southern .California Ticketron outlets.
