Trouble keeping track of over 150 riders in time trials caused the delay, but once the program was underway things went smoothly. Alle"ii Kenyon (Bull set fast time and won the first heat race, followed by Pat Hennen. John Gennai grabbed the second heat and Rick Hocking took the third with Bruce Hanlon and John Grant also getting transfers. Novice Dennis Robinson won the fourth heat, followed by Dave Aldana and Gary Tonda. Bill Morgan won the next scratch in front of Mike Kidd and Mitch Perri. In heat six it was Dave Hansen's Honda leading Lee Seidel and Ron Moore. Neil McGregor topped the next heat and Jeff Hammond took the eighth round. Brian O'Hagan and Steve Ferroni fronted the ninth heat, and Jim Odom led DeWayne Keeter and Craig Rogers home in the last heat. Hansen, Morgan and Hocking each won a semi, and Bob Scally took the consolation even t. David Lewis aced the tropby dash. The final event was a contest between Dave Hansen and Rick Hocking as they moved away from the rest of the field. Hocking had to get by Bill Morgan in the early laps to move up on Hansen's powerful Honda. Rick moved up to Dave's rear wheel by the halfway mark, but couldn't rmd a way to get around and they rmished 1ยท2. Bill Morgan rmished third, followed by Ossa mounted Jeff Hammond and John Gennai in ruth. Mike Kidd was next followed by David Lewis and Ron Kole, riding in his first professional short track. Mitch Perri and Dennis Robinson f"tlled out the rmishing positions. The qualifying problems resulted in two ex tra heat races being added to the program, but the riders were not tined up according to their qualifying times. A protest was filed after the event, and the purse was held up pending a decision from the AMA. Rick Hocking is the defending champion in the national indoor series, and is dermitely in the running to grab the title again this year. The schedule is not yet completely sorted out, but with a minimum purse of $6,000- per event, the indoor circuit is sure to attract the top scratchers from around the nation. There was only One serious injury in tonight's program, which came when Chuck Palmgren got involved in a dispute with a rent-a-cop and got cracked upside the bead with a night stick. Chuck Waln't too happy about it.
