Not a fancy parade with hundred-foot tall 'Donald Ducks and glittery baton twirlers; just three or four dozen dirt bikes and a few floats. Surrounding towns like Ceo Vee, Loco, Turkey, Gasoline, Goodnight, and Acme do their share of cotton farming, but the sign on the mill proclaims "Memphis, Cotton Capitol of the Panhandle" and as such, site of the Cotton Boll National Enduro. Memphis is seriously behind the event. Sunday morning's radio church service was continually interrupted with. updates on the riders' progress and hints on where to get a good view, .....by eleven o'clock they should be at the Estelline Bridge, a good place to watch." The businesses on the downtown square each had an American flag displayed for the even t, and the theater's marquee said "Welcome A.M.A.", the most courteous thing that's been said to the organization in recent months. The biggest news of the day was word that the enduro would be back again next year. Memphis was repaid by the riders, who crossed many palms with out-of-state money and thoughtfully avoided running through the bumper cotton crop (after a stern warning at the riders' meeting), They didn't put on a bad show either, even though most of the top line enduro riders dido't make the trip. Anyone familiar with the Texas Panhandle (most people are since it has to be crossed on the way from anywhere to California) would be inclined to think the area offers little in the way of challenging enduro terrain.
