Photos by Dan Mahony GARDENA, CAL., OCT. 26 The last big night at Ascot figured to be a real hard nose showdown, featuring lots of horsepower and hair on the line for the Golden State Championship and the Ascot point title. The competition was intense, although the I spectator turnout was disappointing. Aksland came away with the high point total and the State Championship, and he had to do it the hard way. Juniors Rick Hocking and Danny Hockie were dose on points, and Hockie's third place in the fmal gave him the Ascot title. Hocking didn't appear tonigh t, which sewed it up for Hockie. John Gennai demolished the field in the Junior final, and did likewise to about a half dozen Ascot lap records. John Hateley trailed DeWayne Keeter by just over 100 points going in. They were third and fifth, respectively, in the final round, with Keeter the plaque made up by Bill n John Gibson. maintaining his lead to lock up the top Expert award. Novices In the first of many Novice. heats, Skip Aksland took the lead for the' fust lap, until Nick Nazzisi got by and decided to stay in fron t. Aksland was bumped to the semi with third place Dennis Briggs (Kaw). In the second heat Gary Bevans took the point for a lap and was then displaced by Tom Berry. Dennis Robinson was third. Chuck Soderstrom wired the third heat, but didn't show up for the fmal, leaving it Bultacoless. Dave Racine left some more experienced riders behind to win the fourth heat. Bad Bradley Holt got started poorly in the fifth heat, then moved through the entire field before the engine wheezed. Last to first to last in three laps. Bruce Foley won it. Bruce Hanlon commanded the final Novice heat, and broke Skip Aksland's record by over one second. Randy Roderick was second followed by Marc Barbani. Juniors In his last meeting as a Junior, John Gennai flew to a wide win in the first Junior heat, breaking the old record as well as the Expert 5-lap record. Sal Peluso and Randy Bailey trailed him home. Rex Barratt jumped ahead in heat two, and Danny Hockie overpowered turn 3 and wen t down on the first lap. The restart was a replay (without the crash) as Barratt led Hockie the whole way with Earl Meyer in for third. Experts See your local HOOAKA dealer DeWayne Keeter held off a determined charge by Randy Scott to win the first Expert heat. Mert Lawwill was in the early going un til his engine lost interest. Tom Horton finished third, Pat McCaul fourth and Don Castro fifth. The second heat saw Gary Scott and Terry Dorsch running tight for the flfSt lap, until Sc.ott pulled ahead to stay. Dave Aldana was riding a Ducati 750, buLit seemed to be at a disadvantage in handling. Tom Rockwood overtook John Hateley and Ron Moore to finish third. WHO IS - - -- UIK! 6 Skip Aksland aced the Novice semi, and following him to the main were Randy Miller, SCOll Marshall and Dennis Briggs_ Walt Foster won the Junior semi when early leader Earl Meyer retired with breakage. John Sperry got the other transfer. Hateley and Moore had a close struggle in the Expert semi, finishing a close 1-2. Don Castro was tbird and Jim Odom grabbed the final transfer when Pat McCaul's engine chuffed on the final lap. Old Folks The Old Timers race provided some laughs on an abbreviated IT circuit near th e s tart-finish line. Dale Brown furnished a batch of 125's for the golden agers to bash around on, and McHai helmets donated- a hundred bucks to the winner.
