When they got away, Skip took the lead and held on, although Sammy cut the course three time's to catch up. White and Hawley tangled on the jump and toppled over the side, and a good time was enjoyed by all. Trophy Dash John Hateley won the trophy dash in fron t of Pat McCaul and Tom Rockwood. Randy Scott slid out and down in the early going, withl Rockwood executing some fancy gymnastics to avoid hitting him. Novice Final Skip Aksland found himself in an unaccustomed starting position on the back row in the Novice final. Bruce Hanlon, Chuck Soderstrom and Tom Berry went to the front of the pack, with Aksland running fourth. On lap three he moved by Berry in tum 2 and then wen t around Soderstrom. Aksland chased Hanlon for anothet. three laps as they far outdistanced the rest of the field. The high point Novice passed Hanlon in tum 2, almost let him by again on the nex t lap, then pulled ahead on the back straight to take the victory. Hanlon was second followed by To", Berry, Dave Racine, Randy Miller and Scott Marshall. Aksland thus gained the Golden State title plus the Ascot West Coast point title. packing· the - pants hassle. IlEAI.ER IQJIlES INVrTB) Expert Final From the outside pole it was DeWayne Keeter, Gary Scott, Randy Scott, Terry Dorsch and Tom Horton. Tom Rockwood, John Hateley, Ron Moore, Don Castro and Jim Odom sat right behind. Dorsch got the hole shot, but Randy Scott, Hateley and Gary Scott quickly caught up as they jammed through number 2. Gary Scott took the lead on '"the straight and began moving away. Randy Scott stayed within range as Hateley, Keeter and then Rockwood were left to contest third. The three ran tight for a long spell, until Hateley and Keeter pulled--out slightly. Randy Scott was working hard but couldn't close on G. Scott enough to make a serious challenge. After dicing with Ron Moore, Rockwood moved back up to challenge Ke.eter in fourth. Rockwood moved by on the next-to-Iast lap to grab fourth place, putting Keeter fifth, Moore sixth and Horton seventh. Odom, Castro and Dorsch filled out the final tally. Gary Scott rode smoothly to take the win at 5.43 :26, breaking the record of 5.45:19 held by Dave Aldana. The flat trackers finale rewrote many records in the Ascot log boo k, where they will remain at least until next year. Junior Final In the front row for the Junior final were Hockie, Peluso, Barratt and, holder of every Junior track record worth making up, John Gennai. In back it was Sperry, Foster, Meyer and Bailey. Rex Barratt was out front into the first turn, but Genilai drove out of No. 2 and passed him on the back straight. Barratt hung close for several laps, but his Norton obviously didn't handle as well at the very edge as did Gennai's Triumph. Super Junior began to stretch out as Hockie and Peluso moved up on Barratt Gennai took it in 3.48:15, breaking his old record. Barratt was second and Hockie's third place assured him the Ascot point championship. Sal Peluso was fourth.
