If you're one of the people who like to trailride on U.S. Forest Service lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin, you'd best take a good look at the new Forest Service Managemen t plan for the area. The plan covers about 116,000 acres, or 57 percent of all the land in the Tahoe Basin. UProtection and enhancement of environmental quality is the first consideration for all activities," the plan announcements proclaim." In the plan itself, that orientation is manifested as follows: "Off-road vehicle use is restricted to snowmobiles, and these are confined to specifically designated areas because of the fragile nature of the Lake Tahoe countryside." Copies of the plan are available free from the U.S. Forest Service, Administrator, Lake Tahoe Basin, P.O. Box 8465, South Lake Tahoe, Ca. 95705. Public comments on the plan should be sent to the same address. General Electric is playing with a new fork oil. It may never be released to the public, it says on the can, but what they're aiming at is an oil that doesn't change viscosity. Yamaha, Honda, S&W, and a few others are experimenting with it. Ooops. Randy Scott didn't really win the Pacific Regional Championship series; Randy Skiver did. Scott finished 17th in the AMA National standings. Hank Scott, of course, won the-Atlantic Regional series in the Junior class. Top Western Junior was John Gennai, and Nick Nazzisi was high Novice. Gary Scott was number 2 AMA National point winner, and Scott Brelsford was ninth in the final standings. Got that? 7UST DON'T GET IN FRONT OF HIM ON THE BANZAI HILL!! knowing, where his new 250 Elsinore was for a week. His club, the Anaheim Highsliders, couldn't find it after two days of searching. In desperation they called Peter Colbert, referee for the race. Pete' called Rescue Three, and Tom Foote went out with one of his good guy cohorts and brought in the bike on their own time last Thursday. Rescue Three is one helluva group of nice people. The photo in the subscription ad, week before' last, was taken in 1917. The man was Jim Underwood (of LeBard & Underwood), and the machine was a 1917 Thor with a Rogers sidecar. The cylindrical tank on the handlebars held "Prest-o-lite" gas for the gas headlight. A long rubber hose ran from the h.eadlight to the taillight, which was also gas Ii t. When the rigid frame machine hi t bumps, the tailligh t would usually go out. SOMETlMES YOU GET. THE ELEVATOR, SOMETIMES YOU Gn THE SHAFT: The City of San Jose used the money that they received from the California Off· Highway Vehicle fund to purchase three Hondas and train 24 officers to chase off·road vehicle users. Sigh. That isn't why we bought green stickies, Sacramento. SURPRISE: Gene Romero is going to ride for Yamaha next year. Burrito is on the comeback trail. A rumor that says Gary Scott will ride for Harley next years has come our way. Amongst the road racing fraternity there is much ado about who's riding what for whom. Take Cal Rayborn for example. It seems most likely that Cal will get hooked up with Don Vesco and race a Yamaha 700, but there is a faction that maintains that it might be worth more money to Calvin ,to ride a Kawasaki maybe a Yoshimura prepared Z-2, the 750cc four cylinder four-stroke that will be imported next year_ Y"'On DuHamel, the other half of what most observers consider North America's strongest road racing twosome, seems likely to stay with Kawasaki, but there (it was probably inevitable) rumors that he will ride a Yamaha 700. Many people would like to _ see Calvin and Yvon have a showdown on the same equipment. 1974 rrught be tb.e year. It looks like this year's hero, Gary Nixon and super·tuner Irv KanemotCi are .likely to 'get hooked up with Yamaha. We don't know about Paul Smart. We asked Jim Evans, who finished third at Daytona in his first race as an Expert, if he was getting a 700 from Yamaha. "If they send me one." saidJirn with a smile. One casualty at the Check Chase came up with more than just painful inju ries. Jeff Maddy .suffered not only a broken back when he strayed from the course and crashed, but the anxiety of not COMING SOON! Answers to those nagging technical questions that pop up at the wrong time in the wrong place. That clever old two-stroke trickster E.C. - Birt will be providing the answers if you come up with the questions. Think up some tough ones to stump him and send them to "ASK E.C." care of Cycle News. The innermost secrets of race preparation will be yours for the asking. I YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVER Y DAY. Gee, we never realized that Roger DeCoster was really from San ta Fe Springs, California. All this time we thought he was Belgian. The funny thing is that Sylvain Geboers seems to be his neighbor there. We, know the truth now because we read it in the official AMA list of riders for the Trans-Am. Shucks, Roger's been one of them Americans all along. Where's his extra contingency money? Oh, yeah. This same paragon of MX lIccuracy informs us that German Werner Schutz is sponsored by the American Motocxoss Team. Keep sending in those $5 to "keep our Yankee riders out there battling in the intematiorial motocross wars. Huh? The National M'inicycle Association has hooked up with CMC, with the first cooperative event slated to be the "World Mini GP" at Indian Dunes, January 5 and 6. Wide World of Sports is scheduled to film the meeting for television. Riders from either organization can ride the other's events with their current license. Sears Poin t IS abou t to get in to the motocross biz with a new 2.2 mile course. The Sears Point facility has plenty of room and lots of elevation changes and' we're told that the track is wide, fast, and different. An AMA sanctioned semi·pro event is scheduled for November 4. The American Indoor Championship is about to get going again. The fint race will be held at Oakland Coliseum on November 3. last year's winner, Rick Hocking, is readying a Honda four stroke for \this year's series. Kenny Roberts apparently won't contest it. AS IN THAILAND. We do notice, however, that the AMA has finally started spelling Torlief Hansen's name the right way: Thorlief. After notching his thir.d overall win in the TransAMA motocross series, Adolf Weil has a fairly comfortable points lead. Hakan Andersson seems to be the only other rider with the current combination of desire and ability to beat the cool·headed German. Here's the way the top ten stack up after this week's round in Florida. 710 . Mai Adolf Weil Gerrit Wolsink 505 Mai Willi Bauer 499 Mai Hakan Andersson 440 Yam 439 Yam Pierre Karsmakers 374 Suz Roger DeCoster 230 Yam Tim Hart 220 Suz Sylvain Geboers 213 Bul Jim Pomeroy 190 Hus Mike Hartwig Don't forget that Hakan missed the first three events of the series. It will be hard to top Adolf, though. The two of them finished one·two in the 250 World Championship this year. Entries for the Cal State 100 Enduro on November 18th are now open. The Enduro starts at 8:01 in Lucerne. Info on mail entries is available from John Townsend at 714/557-0754. / 5
