Wayne Cook 250 Mitch Mayes on a 400 Husky and Jim Fishback on a 400 CZ battled it out for one hour and 45 minutes, but at the finish it was The rll'St loop of the Desert Knights hare and hound was 43 miles with a lot of Hoop-de-dos, sandwashes and rough trails; the start was about 5 miles long to the banner, with lots of trails and man to beat in the 100cc class as he did it again, rmishing 17th overall on this fast course. Jeff Fries was second Amateur in on a 250 Honda. Joe Wesselman picked up first 500 Amateur on a Yamaha and Neil Christman was the second man in the 175 class on a Penton. Rick Austin was the first Amateur in the Div. 2 class. The first Amateur loocc gold went to Roger Reeu on a Penton. He said, ''The second loop was fast, 1 was able to make up a lot of time." And that he did. The Novice race was a real see-saw battle. Balltine had the lead most of the rust loop, but Casey Perkins was the rust man into ~e pits. He had a long gas check and lost the lead to Lee Elias on a 500 Yamaha. Balltine checked out in second spot and Elias was able to hold the lead all the way on the second loop and came in for th e win. This is the firs t time back after a five-year layoff. "The course was well marked with lots of lime and yellow ribbon," he said. Balltine was the next Novice in taking second 500, also on a Yamaha. Gary JohnSon on a 250 Kawasaki pulled in next to take first 250 Novice, and Casey Perkins was able to pull back up and take the next spot and claim rust Div.2 on his Honda. Tom Schell was next, taking second 250 on a Suzuki, followed by Dan Harris on a 125 Yamaha taking second Div. 2. After a little wait our 100cc Novice hero came over the rise in a cloud of dust and it was Randy Robertson on IiIS hot Hodaka. Randy is 16 years old and he said, "This is my last transfer ride before going Amateur. I am sure glad I rmally got a rust place." The Desert Knights were really worried about their second loop, and had to work twice as hard. It seems the SRA was going to have a run the same day, crossing the second loop, and of course the District 37 run had the BLM OK. The second loop was very well marked; we don't know about the SRA pink and orange ribbon. _. 1I1d_ WI. . P ..... Results: By Dick Wright Mayes In fOT the win. Fishback had to settle fOT a well earned second. Second Y_ar .nduro L almost flat. It was faSt for the rITst three miles, a real drag race for the big bikes, then it made a left tum into a sandwash and headed for the hills. The rust man into the sandwash was Mayes then came the up and coming Wayne Cook on a 250 Honda, then Fishback. The Novices started 30 minutes after the Amateur/Experts and it was the very smooth and fast Roben Ball tine in the leady by 100 yards. He was gone before the next man came over the hill. The first loop took one hour, the leader bIas ting through the pits was Mayes with Fishback right behind_ Wayne Cook was the next man through followed by Dave Lapraik on a new Yamaha. Next came Jeff Wright on his 175 Puch, but he had to fix his brake !".~~st four spots. The second loop was a fast 38 miles, with an 80 mile an hour fire road. Mayes and Fishback came into check four bar to bar and went out with Mayes holding the trail by a wheel length. The leaders made the last loop in forty-five minutes. Following Mayes and Fishback at the rmish was Wayne Cooke, who is really cooking on his new Honda tuned by Tom Sawyer Honda. Then came Dave Lapraik on a 250 Yamaha, followed by Doug Winchell on a 250 Bultaco and Bill Saltzman on a 400 Husky. Jeff Wright diced with Saltzman for the entire last loop, and Saltzman pulled Wright by 10 feet of the rmish. Saltzman took third 500 Expen and Wright took rust 175cc.
