Jean's boy, Mal Maciel, who finished second to Hegarty, filed the protest. Hegarty's dad responded to Jean with a side bet offer: double your money or nothing. Jean backed off on that offer. The protest wen t through and Eddie Hegarty was found legal, proving to have one of the fastest 250's around. Eddie Hegarty caught e.nough attention. that he gets advanced to Junior for the next race meeting. J K Cycle Inn parts man, Kent Johnson held a challenging Dennis Robinson off for 15 laps to win the 360 Expert main with Terry Otton close by for third. Eddie Diaz. (Yam), the son of a prominent trials rider, Frank Diaz, continues to win the 360 ovice class. An ou tsider, Ross Putnam, ran second with another local rider. Robert Datto, in third. Jim Banks moved up from sixth to second place in the 100 Novice final, but there was no catching winner Bryan Caves. In the 250 Expert final. Redwood City (714) 369-4112 By Bill Spencer OAKDALE, CAL., SEPT. 29 High point awards were the subject of much discussion for the !"st bike. He was protes1lld. found I• • and advanced to Junior. last night short' track at the Pioneer Arena in Oakdale and with about five events still subject to some change of who might take home the big brass, the racing was at its greatest. Ted Davidson had the closest races of the series that began back in mid-J une with a one poin t advan tage in both the 125 and 350 Expert divisions. Teddy handled them both rather well by winning both events and beating out Craig Scroggins in the lightweight and Dennis Huff's Yamaha twin in the larger event. Riding a new super Kawasaki short tracker. when the middle boy of the famed Davidson racers gets ready for the pro stuff, he will be right in there like his No.1 brother was as a scrambler. The J 25 battle was the best and a real thriller, with Alan Wood providing the other competition. AI and his Cancilla Hodaka have been winning short tracks of late and he tried to put one on the local shoes tonjgh l.Teddy took the jump with Woods having to work by two riders on the third lap to get to him. He did it with a fantastic pass through the first comer on the outside and then set up the 'Torco' kid for an inside pass exiting the next comer. Thjs hardly daunted the Carabela rider, who waited until the white showed and then passed Wood exactly the way Wood had gotten to him. All very professionaUy done. Another hot battle was in the 200 Junior class between Skip Hathaway and Rick Silva. These two had been battling for the entire series and Rick had a one point advantage going into the last round. The heat was not showing too well for Silva who finjshed near last while Hathaway had already won the 100 Junior and was looking for yet another hjgh point, just like Ted Davidson. He didn't get it though as Ken Jackson took the start advantage with Silva putting a mce pass on Hathaway on the second lap and keeping that distance to the checkered and the big brass. In the 70cc Novice minfuike run, the George Hathaway (92W) leads Rick Silva at Oakdale before Silva got by and won the hi... point title.
