Here's a solution to a problem that has plagued all of us at one time or another, MoreDH If you're looking for slightly more tractable performance from your TM 125 Suzuki Dale Herbrandson is now offering a reed conversion. Because of the configuration of the cylinder barrel it is difficult to install a reed assembly on 125 Suzukis. The intake manifold is so long on the stock Suzook that it places the reeds too far from the cylinder. Herbrandson mills down the back of the barrel 1~ inches and then welds on a 125 CZ reed manifold. Forming the necessary boost ports also presen ts a problem on the Suzuki because of the proximity of the piston ring ends. The ports must be kept very narrow to avoid having the rings expand into the ports. Additional ring and piston support is gained by using the 125 Hodaka porting tool, designed by Herb,:"ndson to d,!ll out the necessary PO!ts. Af.ter al.! thts a 28 or 30m,!, Bing carb IS added, as It seems to best comphme'nt the reed installatIon. ThIS carb extends an additional one-half incli behind the stock item and requires a slight shortening of the intake hose. The stock air filter assembly can be used. What you get in the end is a powerband that extends 2,000 RPM lower than the stock state. Horsepower is increased only slightly to 17.1 with the stock pipe. Herbrandson claims that -pipe modification~ will produce considerably more power. If you're interested talk to D.H. A large 4·petal reed valve for the Yamalia Mini-80 is now being offered by DH Enterprises. The DH reed gives more than 2~ times the hreathing area through the reed, compared to the stock 2-petal reed. The DH petals are made of a "digestible" linen cloth, phenolic material. With the DH reed, a stock Mini 80 engine can handle a 24mm Mikun;, and a modified engine will run with a 26mm carbure tor. Performance improvements with the DH reed are especially felt in throttle response and top end power. The DH reed will cost ya $24, and they also have 24mm and 26mm carbs in stock (Mikuni, of course). DH Enterprises, 1605 Lynngrove Dr., Manhattan Beach, CA. 90266.213/372-6427. DH also has this spiffy new, updated 28mm Mikuni carb, the VM28-IJ6, and it works great with reed valve engines.
